AVG sucks

I just downloaded AVG Free edition and the following happened:

I started the installation file and it started to run another setup.exe file
I happened to have in the
same directory as their installation file! After removing that file it tried
to run an old 16-bit program
and failed with that to... Finally it told me that i do not have sufficient
rights to install on my computer.
I, of course, have administration rights! I sent a mail to their support,
that automatically replied that
no support is offered for the free edition. Now I am really annoyed! Who
needs viruses when we
have anti-virus programs? I have been running Norton antivirus before and it
has been nothing but
problems. I made the mistake to pushase it on the net, and once every second
month it popped
a dialog thankning me for using the trial version!?! Anyone know any
anti-virus program that don't
just get you pissed off or keeps anoying you?

Just downloaded the trial version of NOD32. Started the installation and it
asked
for a username and password to get updates. No info is given on where I can
get
that! I do not want to read endless webpages and copyright notices. I want
to try
a new anti-virus program and I do not have the whole day to spend on
installing it.
NOD32 goes away. Sorry guys your program is probably very good, but I
stumbled
on the first hurdle... I will probably never visit your site again....

Try F-Prot for Windows <http://www.f-prot.com> or NOD32
<http://www.nod32.com>.

lol, I had the same thing with AVG a couple of years ago when I was on
W98. The setup file won't over right any previous temp files when it
is extracting the setup, so any setup file named the same will not be
overwritten and so when the setup is run you will get the install for
a different program or even an older version of AVG.
I think with me it was some game demo.

Choosing a good AV is always about personnel taste. With me I can't
stand AVs that prompt me everytime they update. A little spinning icon
or a log file is enough for me. Just so I know when it is updating.
Big splash screens or AVs that minimize what I am doing just so I can
watch it update, piss me off.
Especially when I am in the middle of a multiplayer tournament (last
time that happened was with AVG).

That's why I am currently using NOD32. :)

Kalle,

The following info is provided by Nod32 regarding how to get your username
and password;

"First of all you must insure that you are using the Username and Password
that was sent to you by Eset. Then you must be sure that they are being
copied exactly as given. These are case sensitive - we suggest that you cut
and paste them to ensure exact transcription."

Now, my guess would be you have an email somewhere that was sent to you
which contains the info you need.

Only license holders (paying customers) get use of the full features.
That's pretty common with any trialware AV product. If you weren't so
f#$%^&* important that you couldn't be bothered to do some reading, you
may have found that out.

With your demonstrated lack of patience, maybe you should have
someone else do it for you ~ a friend maybe? The best programs
imo are the ones that require the user to take an active part in their
operation. Also, it is probably a good idea to "install" programs
without having a bunch of stray "setup.exe" file strewn about in the
same directory. Having a friend set up the program and adjust it to
your preferences might be the best option for you.

You don't need it for the trial. They should probably make that
clearer on the install, but shame on you for dismissing IMO the best
AV money can buy.

seriously tempted to give you a list of free av sites - but then you
might visit them, download the setup programs all into the same
directory, and lose patience with them if they do not work in 5
seconds :)

try www.pricelessware.org. and look for antivirus.

and take your time..........

AFAIK there only users of the full paid for version of NOD32 are
entitled to updates. The trial version is just that a trial version not
all of the feature are available.
I do not want to read endless webpages and copyright notices. I want

Then you are going to be continuously disappointed. Anti-virus software
is a risk management tool not a magic bullet.

It's your loss.

I could not get AVG to install on a Win98 system. Setup just ran, and
ran, and ran. I installed Alwil Avast 4 Home Edition which does have
user support via email - even for the free version.

Some people shouldn't own computers either.

Which is not to say some people shouldn't be writing software either.

I've never had a problem with AVG Free Edition - could it be a case of
pebkac (problem exists between keyboard and chair) ? :)

Maybe thats true, but the installation of AVG still sucks. I havn´t had a
virus in 4 years
and I have not been running any virus program. As I wrote I used Norton for
some months
until I got feed up. I still think the best virus programs are using
Microsoft Update and webmail
with virus scan. Everybody keeps paying for shitty virus programs and I cant
se why...

You mean you were not aware you had a virus. Not the same as being
virus free.

This does not make sense at all - update does what it says - updates
you windows to fix problems someone tells them about - often months
after hackers etc have discovered the vulnerability.

Webmail virus scans are manual, and not in real time - will tell you
that you are infected - but cannot prevent it.
. Everybody keeps paying for shitty virus programs and I cant
se why...

If you are really struggling to install programmes, either your
windows installation is broken, or you are far too stupid to be
volunteering opinions in this group - you risk being ridiculed.

Kalle,

For what it's worth, I installed AVG a few days ago, Perfectly smooth
installation and the program works fine. It works differently than Norton
AntiVirus, which I'd been using previously for many years, so it's taken a
bit of getting used to.

You say you have not had any viruses in four years. How do you know that if
you haven't been running any AV checker? Not all viruses jump out at you to
announce their presence.

Windows Update may help with some vulnerabilities, but that's not the same
as guarding against viruses. Webmail virus scanning will vary from ISP to
ISP. Most of us would not rely on that.

Let me guess, you haven't been running a spell checker in four years either.

Hole patching for Win98 ends in 2 weeks.

We have several choices:

1. Practice safehex and use freeware/shareware replacements for IE/OE
2. Practice safehex and continue with Win98
3. Move to XP
4. Move to non-MS OS
5. ?

Yup. It does that and the same thing happened to me when I first tried it
several months ago.

Same here. No support for the free edition. They don't even acknowledge
bug reports. E.g. the smtp module of the personal email scanner doesn't
support authentication.
Anyone know any
anti-virus program that don't
just get you pissed off or keeps anoying you?

None of them annoy me, but I'm not easily annoyed. Right now I'm using AVG
free with the personal email scanner and everything is working very
smoothly. I especially like the small AVG memory footprint on this Win98
machine.

J

John Blaustein

Joseph,

Which e-mail client are you using the Personal Email Scanner with? I assume
you do not mean you are using the OE Plug-in in AVG. As I recall the
Personal Email Scanner is another program and is available on the Grisoft
site. Yes?

Does it work with Outlook Express?
