I am using the latest version of AVG - Free. For the last week when
using the update manager I get a message telling me to download from
their website. Anyone else getting this? I wonder why the update
manager no longer updates the ref files.

I'm not getting that message.

AVG 6.0.752, release date 02/09/2003
Virus Database 503, release date 03/09/2004

Is that the version you're using?

alt.comp.anti-virus newsgroup may have your answer.
Did you read, ask there?

Yes - same version as you. 6.0.752. I can download the new ref.
files but it was easier using the auto update.

What update server do you use? Search this NG (Google) for an adapted
URL.INI with better ones if you are still using the CZ server.

Does one need to keep all those .BIN files in the AVG6\UPDATE folder?
Do any of them need to be kept once the update is completed?

Probably a busy server.
For more servers look at: http://tinyurl.com/69ro2

It was mentioned a while ago that Grisoft advices to keep the last two bin
files for the non-freewareversion. I do the same with my freeware version,
no problems so far.

I copied the post to the acf Wiki:

ISTM that's a good place to stash info like that for future reference.

I tried to follow up on that with:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=http_fe_free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp_fe_ftp.grisoft.cz
3=ftp_fe_ftp.grisoft.com
4=http_fe_www.grisoft.com

6=ftp_xx_ftp.grisoft.cz

8=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/xx

Actual URL=9

but it I couldn't get it to look proper (wrapped all over the place) :(

Add a space in front of each item to create a list. (I had the same
problem.) :)

This wraps:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=http_fe_free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp_fe_ftp.grisoft.cz

This doesn't:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=http_fe_free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp_fe_ftp.grisoft.cz
