Not sure. Were you the 1,000,000th customer per chance? Maybe it's a
door prize. }:O)

Seriously though, I've never heard of this. You're certain that you
double-clicked the correct file, and not another in the same folder as
your AVG download? I know that's lame, but you never know.

What *exactly* did you see when you tried to launch the AVG setup? Can
you post a link to a screencap of the display?

I would also suggest that you eliminate the possiblilty that you've been
hijacked. Run Ad-Aware, Spybot and a trojan cleaner (someone else can
recommend one).

I'd like to see that screenshot, though...

I've had this problem, but it was a different wrong program it was trying to
install. Try clearing your temp folders (probably in C:\Documents and
Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\Temp) and trying again.

One possible way out of your problem is to rename the compressed file of
the program it is trying to load (some are just called setup). You might
find it in the same directory as the compressed file for AVG. It might have
similar initials eg AVG something.

Good luck,

Whoops. And get a firewall if you haven't got one yet.

Whats this?.

Adding to the suggestions:

Try run chkdsk or Scandisk if Win9x (checks for cross-linked files
among other things).

Try the free Filemon utility from <http://www.sysinternals.com>. Run
during the install and try figure out what files are accessed by what
program when you click the install file. (start Filemon a second
before you click the install file, then stop it right away after -
else you will drown in info. You just want to know what files are
being called/accessed during the install, from where and by what
program)

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

Go with what Jim has said. I reckon AVG extracts to a temp folder, then
tries to run it's file called setup.exe. If you already have a file called
setup.exe in the temp folder, it will try to run that one instead. I've had
it in the past, and the way I got round it was to delete all the tempory
application files that look as if they would cause a problem. AVG should
install OK after this.

Thanks very much Bjorn. You tipped it.
I ran scandisk and got a few .chk fragments with with suspicicios mentions
of AVG and Adaware.
A salutry lesson. RUN at least SCSNDISK more often! the said AVG
installation file is still installing the 'burner prog. but had the option
to uninstall.
Dozens of registry settings were removed. JV16 found the rest. So I hope
things are ok now. Will download AVG AGAIN and hopefully will be ok
Thanks again and to all the others for their help. I know it was OT to start
with.
Cheers

Use this instead. I've tried AVG also but like this better.

You got there first, it IS a bug that has hit other programs - the
"Setup.Exe" collision.
If it offers a choice of where to unpack, unpack to a new folder, of
burst the archive with your favourite archiver, and then run SETUP
from where YOU put it.

Or, give your TEMP files a damn good cleanout.
