AVG problems a factor of their own success?

Surely aren't the problems we are having (first time for a while with me
tonight) updating AVG's free edition down to the fact that it's so popular?

Their servers must be smoking with so many ppl trying to d/load the updates.

Are we being too harsh on them, or are they indeed trying to force us to pay
for v7?

Personally Ive never had any problems updating and the fix (of putting back
in the original server addresses) has been around for 6 months now ,
though it wasnt so widly known then as it is now.Up until a few days ago i
kept AVG as a backup on demand scanner , but finally uninstalled it as it
just doesnt offer any better detection than avast. In fact in my experience
it detects far less than avast now.I dont believe users of AVG6 (even if it
is free) are being too harsh , as a security product that cant be updated
rapidly is pretty much useless in my opinion.I believe that they are the
victim of thier own success but should have forseen that and upgraded thier
servers accordingly or just pulled the plug on the free version , or just
came out and said that free users will get weekly updates..I dont think its
a very good advert persoanlly to persuade people to buy AVG7 by denying them
updates for the free version, in fact it seems to be having the opposite
affect

That's part of it... The second half is the sudden explosion of new
viral variants over the last month.

Since yesterdays virus dat files don't contain today's new viral-spawns
many people have resorted to daily updates. This has cased a three or
maybe four fold increase in the number of downloaded updates over the
default "once a week" updating, creating this self-imposed DoS. AVG
will eventual find the time to implement a better update server for
it's free users... With any luck.

Oh... One question does come to mind...
Is anyone having issues updating MacAfee? I can't get one of my PCs to
update its dat files, and a quick Stinger test doesn't revel anything.

If they are trying to get us to pay they lost a customer. Two days ago
I finally got fed up with the update situation and am now using AVAST,
which I am liking a lot. I had been using AVG for years and never
would have tried anything else. Bad move on AVG's part.

I suffered problems updating a while back, and then discovered that you
could alter the default update server, this worked for a while, but now its
just as clogged as before.

This caused me to install Avast - which I had tried before and uninstalled,
I still don't like it. It don't like it's interface and it's slow, although
I haven't yet uninstalled it I'll continue to use for on demand scanning
occassionally.

My vote goes to AntiVir PE, it may look clunky and amateurish, but for me it
does the job - and they respond quickly to user submissions (of suspected
virii).

If the program update doesn't work the first time, I just do a manual
install. I do the same when SpyBot or other programs have update problems
when possible.

I can easily find out about all the latest updates here...a special,
one-stop notification center providing the latest updates for many types of
AV and scumware programs.

That's because we've all caught onto the fix.

The avast interface can be changed by choosing from many skins that are
available.I try to use "lite" skins as a w98 user, where resources are
important. Its true that avast is probably the more resource hungry of the 3
AVs ,but it does boast a proper email scanner (for what thats worth)antivir
doesnt ,and AVGs isnt worth having as it scans the inbox.dbx folder after
arrival.Antivir when i tried it last annoyed me a bit by continually telling
me on openeing about a suspicious entry in my registry run key (it was a vbs
script to clean logs)I couldnt find anywhere to exclude it.Is there such a
feature in antvir now to exclude such entries?
