I switched from AVG to Avast when AVG began having trouble updating --
seemed like server problems. Avast is vastly better. It actually
creates a database of your infectables that it will use if it has to
restore one. I can't remember it running into an update server glitch.
What I really love about it is that it, when set on auto-update, go
for an update on bootup, and you can set how often after boot it will
try again.
The variety of on-demand scanners and their settings it has is
amazing.
And it's ready for Win 64.
One more vote here for Avast!. I haven't had any problem with it and the
updates are seamless, (though it's a bit trickier for the laptop that uses
Internet Connection Sharing through my desktop). I seldom get a virus sent
to me, (Yahoo's junk mail filter prevents almost all of those), but the few
I've gotten it warned me right away before the attachment even hit my disk.
With AVG, I never was certain it was interfacing correctly with Outlook
Express.
It also has 7 different services that you can turn on or off based on how
you use the internet, (P2P, Internet mail, Exchange mail, WebFilter, IM,
etc.) I also feel that it has a small footprint and isn't a big drain on
CPU cyles.
Excellent product, in my experience. With this free product available I
have a hard time seeing paying for AV software AND paying yearly fees for
updates.
