Avg not updating

When I try to update AVG it says it can't connect to the internet.
Does anyone know why? It worked fine until a couple weeks ago.

The reason is that Grisoft have become negligent and sloppy, this is not the
first time that their servers have failed to provide updates and, as always,
they communicate nothing. Elsewhere in this group you can find instructions
on editing the file (url.ini) that AVG uses to search for updates although
it doesn't seem to work for everyone.

I have had a number of clients whose security was threatened by inability to
update and so began the process of switching them to Avast (www.avast.com)
which seems to be leagues beyond avg in terms of efficiency and customer
support. Other here may not share that opinion but I would recommend going
to avast and junking AVG.

If they lose enough users they might start to value us!

If they lose enough users then they won't have their servers
swamped by people trying to get updates for the plethora
of worms and viruses being spewed out that wouldn't really
be any threat at all if those same people would just stop and
think about what they are doing.

<takes breath>

Why stampede to the defs when all you really need to do is not
execute (sometimes passworded and zipped?) executable files
that arrive via e-mail, unrequested?

If a user is going to take these risks, then it really doesn't matter
how up-to-date they keep their AV software - they are going to
get burned by malware eventually and then switch AVs because
that one 'let something slip by'.

First people buy into the whole 'AV will protect me' idea, then
they fall for the 'autoupdate scenario', and now the AVs must
compete to be the fastest def updaters and deal with the whole
bandwidth consumption problem of their servers when panic
strikes.

I've had difficulties updating lately but using the free version, I'm not
complaining, specially as this free version has so far managed to "catch"
all the nasties I've been sent (mainly worms). Anyway, the following,
submitted by "donutbandit" in "alt.windows-me" worked for me;

Open the url.ini folder in the AVG folder and replace what's there with
this:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=3

yes, we all know that one but the point is the inability to get updates for
some people and the subsequent 'cannot detect an internet conn...' is a
direct result of snafu at the Grisoft end of things. If they would respond
to e-mails about the issue or take a pro-active step in communicating with
users it might be a different issue.

In this most competitive of all worlds customer service really matters even
if you are providing a free 'sample'.

But apart from that, having been an AVG user for quite a few years now I
find that Avast is simply far better both in it's design and facilities.

yes, if they want our money that's exactly what they have to do. These
people are not guardian angels you know, they are in business, they sell a
product to us. If someone else provides a better service then they will
lose.

I just updated while reading these threads, the update started faster than
my download of some of these threads. Did same thing last time I was on. I
have had problem connecting to server a couple of times, but not recently. I
tried avast on my son's machine. I like the AVG interface better but have no
other way to judge. I use mailwasher and Pegasus mail so virus risk is low
anyway. Since the product is free reference to money is irrelevant.

Autoexecution problems are handled by software patches and
not by AV updates. The vulnerability was announced in plenty
of time for a fix to have been in place before Blaster was even
unleashed.

Blaster defs did nothing to fix the real problem with a broken
internet facing service. This also caused people to stampede
to get new defs for variants that they shouldn't have even been
worried about.

P.S. I was not ranting at you, nor was I defending AVG's lack
of support for the stampeding masses. It just irks me that users
are screaming for faster implementation of definitions so that they
can more quickly have their AV jump up and save their bacon.
