My AVG licence is due to expire shortly, is it worth renewing or will the
free MSE do as good a job (or better) ?

Thoughts/opinions?

You might be better off with AVAST...which has recently become stronger
than Avira....flip flops....though both are good...with a bit of help
from the likes of DriveSentry. You could go with Comodo Internet Security
Premium which provides a much wider variety of protection.

MSE is a resource hog and misses much of the newer malware.

AVG is still free to renew....

Even if you BUY the "paid version" as stated in the Subject header?

There are freeware and payware versions of Grisoft's AVG. The OP
definitely said they have or are interested in the payware version which
includes protection mechanisms *not* available in the freeware version;
see http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free. Some users
actually do want support from the software vendor. Won't get that with
the freeware version.

For the payware version, you buy renewal licenses. Since I don't use
AVG (and especially a paid version of it), I can't find out what is the
cost for a license renewal (http://www.avg.com/us-en/upgrade). Don't
know why they hide the costs.

What version of Windows?

AVG antivirus always has a free version.

So is your suggestion to the OP to discontinue the paid version and go
with the free version?

Yes, Your Honor!
If so, what functionality of the paid version is lost when going to
the free version (so the OP knows just what you are suggesting)?

As a customer, he/she could just ask AVG's customer service.

What is your suggestion as to the Korean conflict? Will the North
attack the South? You are asian so you are an expert on all things in
that part of the world.

US should stay out of their way and let them fight. It's a civil war
only, just like the one in USA. :)

I have installed MSE on several computers, albeit they are all newer
machines, and have not noticed any resource problems. Additionally,
none of the users have encountered a problem with newer malware.
Where ever you go, there you are.

I recently employed the freeware version of Comodo AV and with my paid
for software firewall by Look 'n' Stop and my hardware firewall I am
very happy with it.

System is XP on a Pentium IV.
