I would like to get rid of AVG free so what is the next best freeware ?

Next best? <grin> Don't you mean a better choice? I like Avast,

Is there a free version of Avira? I don't need a firewall as I have a
hardward firewall in my home network router. On the site, all I see
is paid version that includes the firewall - am I missing something?

Unless you are using Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes (MAPI or VIM),
scanning email is worthless.
