If you "really liked" AVG, why change? They had a problem with server
capacity and they've taken measures to deal with it.

What a load of crap, if you don't like the FREE versions then BUY the
damn thing.

1. Quick updating has been easy to 'arrange' via the HOSTS file
redirection.

2. Now Grisoft has acknowledged the server bottleneck and taken steps to
remedy it.

Its free, service has been immeasureably improved - yet you are still a
knocker. Sounds like Avast or AntiVir would love you as a consumer,
please go.

If the 'improved' service for AVG Free works then there will be no need for
the HOSTS redirect.

ps, the currently "hot" redirect to www.grisoft.com works well. But a bit
of experimenting with the actual IP addresses of all the download sites
that were available with AVG 6 shows me that there are a lot of different
options for a HOST redirect. Whetehr AVG closes all these remains to be
seen.

Not really. I agree with them. You get what you pay for. Free is free,
and if it doesn't work for you find something else.

Yes, there have been frustrating times trying to download an update but it
never lasted more than a day or two.

For the many people who use and appreciate a free security product I concur
with 'Mandy'.

I made the mistake of tossing out my list, not realizing that they may
still be useful for versions beyond 6. Mind posting yours?

It was true with version 6, but not any more.
Updates for version 7 are bigger and they comes once a day...
It's great ! But I'm afraid that Grisoft tries to incitate people to
move to payware with this lack of access to their server...
Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong. Future will tell.
Wait and see.

Ah, there we are. Thanks, Mark. I used to have several lists, including
one of yours, I recall. Mandy's remark about trying other servers in the
HOSTS file made me realize that maybe I should have kept the lists, just
in case the current FREE server slows to a crawl again. "Be prepared"
was my old Boy Scout motto. ;-)
