How can I disable the frequent annoying popups that AVG Free
uses to announce that nothing is wrong (0 viruses found)?
These steal focus and ruin my typing, sometimes with damaging results.
Also, the e-mail scanner changes all my mail ingoing or outgoing
to change any URLs or UNC names by prefixing the typed address
with "HYPERLINK <hyerlinkreference>", making my outgoing
emails unreadable to my colleagues. We must communicate
addresses of files all the time.
I'm almost ready to dump the product.

Set it to scan when you know you will not be using the system.

Email scanning is useless and prone to errors as you have found out.
Disable it.
Infact, I did not install that feature when I did the Custome install.
If you must open email attachemnts that have malware then an alert will pop
up telling you of the infection. :)

Or set it not to scan at all!
The resident shield is great and catches just about everything anyway.
