AVG Free - Charge to remove virus?

I have a list of free anti-virus products on one of the pages on my website,
of which AVG is one. I use it at home and have always been happy to
recommend it.

BUT, I received an email from someone today saying that he had AVG (free)
but had a virus (I don't know which one, and I got the impression it was
found during a scan) and that AVG directed him to their website and wouldn't
remove the virus unless he paid a registration fee ($39.95).

Does anyone else have any experience like this? Is AVG free until it has to
remove something? Should it be one to avoid?

Thanks.

Brian,

That doesn't sound like AVG, more like one of these:

There is an A-V-G product listed, but it is not the same as Grisoft's AVG.

Since I really like AVG, I'm inclined to believe you. It certainly "feels"
more likely (now that you've raised the possibility) that it was actually
some other tool. I'll get back to the chap and enquire.

I like the link by the way. Excellent.

thanks
