I just installed this program.

When I open a few windows in my browser, everything slows to a crawl.

I assume this is due to a larger footprint?

Any suggestions? Should I disable some features?

Or should I switch to a different free program (is there one that's better
and won't slow things down?)

Interesting.

It slowed down again and using task manager I see 99% of the CPU is taken up
with avgrsc.exe

Just disable the link scan part.
See if that doesn't pep it up back to normal.

I have uninstalled AVG 8 and my usage is down around 15%. But, every
once in awhile the avgrsx comes back and runs my cpu to 100%. This is
after it has been uninstalled, so I don't know what is going on. F-
prot and Trend don't find anything and spybot killed spyhunter 2 days
ago so now I am running at 5% cpu if avgrsx doesn't run.

Is AVG working on fixing this? I have been an avid AVG user and
promoter until the last couple of versions which have not worked well
for me.

I would suggest using a good registry cleaner; one of the best is
RegSupreme, which has a free, fully functional, 30 day trial period.

One of the best features of the program is the default setting to prompt the
user for a backup of the current registry, so if there is any problem with
the corrections made the user can restore the prior registry settings.

If you trawl through the AVG forums, their stock answer to questions along
the lines of 'why is your new software so shite?' is to upgrade your memory
to 1gb...

Well, no surprise. Removing AVAST was painful. My machine was so
loaded down with their software, I couldn't get Add/Remove
Software to kick in. I had to wait overnight until I finally got
a prompt from AVAST to remove their
software.
At least this was done almost completely, except for a few temp
files and folders

left behind. As I mentioned earlier, AVG's removal tool had
errors and I had to manually remove it.

I am really nervous now about any virus protection software
clogging up my machine
and bringing it to a crawl. If I get in a masochistic mood, I
may try some of the other
programs suggested. For now, I will take my chances without
virus protection, being
as careful as possible not to open attachments or other suspect
material.

I used ZSoft Uninstaller off in a jif.

System Requirements: AVG Free V 8.0: [per AVG]

Computer Hardware
Intel Pentium 300 MHz
30 MB free hard drive space (for installation)
256 MB RAM

ref: http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition#tba3

Saw somebody recomment Process Tamer by DonationCoder to limit cpu usage. I
am now going to try this program. [for other purposes , not V8.0]

Why bother listing such specs? What a waste of time and effort. Why would
they be so dishonest?

A realistic min spec for AVG 8 free edition:

2.5ghz p4 or equivalent
512mb memory

For their 'security suite':

dual core processor
1gb of memory
