I just started using AVG a couple days ago. I am not a happy user. I find
the messages it tacks on the bottom on outgoing and incoming e-mails
obnoxious. I wasn't able to find a place to turn it off. So now I have to
decide which other AV best fits my needs.

For the prior year I used F-Prot. I found it most annoying. When a virus
came in it put in my face a warning box. Forced to always be on top. So
several times a day, to get rid of it, I would have to go to my attachments
folder and delete the virus. If I left e-mail running while I was away, the
virus would be added to the system restore. Why not simply delete the
virus? What I want is a package that deletes them as them come it. Why
would I want to save them?

You give up too easily, why not ask?

Open the AVG Control Center (sic), click Email Scanner, Properties,
Plug-Ins, Configure

When installing AVG7 select "custom install" and untick "e-mail scanner".
Then you don't get the reminder on boot, that the e-mail scanner is not
working. :-)

Okay. I can uncheck the scan of outgoing e-mail. But I want it to check
incoming e-mail, just not tack the message at the bottom. It appears that
if I uncheck then it doesn't scan.

Don, you can leave the 'Check...' box ticked, but untick the 'Certify...'
box. It's the certification that leaves the message.

This is not true. That's why the hierarchy goes
scan
certify
only with attachments

To prove the above, send yourself eicar "virus" with certify switched
off - it will only tag it if the mail *does* contain a virus

Can it delete viruses when they come it? Is there no message tacked on the
bottoms of outgoing and incoming e-mails?

Don <donwiss at panix.com>.

Oh yeah. Tacking on that message makes a lot of difference. :-)

Don, you might want to check and see if your ISP has a virus checker.

I have a trojan (dropper-A Bridge -- NASTY!) zipped up and for a test I
tried to send it to myself as an attachment to check the outgoing email
virus check in AVG. It failed, but the trojan was caught by my ISP which
gave me an alert on it. AVG scan does check inside of zipped files but
apparently the email scanner did not.

Why should i keep it around even zipped up?
For tests like this.
