Hello,

Upon starting my machine I get the following error message:

avgc32.exe - Application Error

'The instruction at "0x5f4012a1" referenced memory at "0x00000004" The
memory could not be "read." Click OK to terminate the program'

I know this is a problem with the AVG control centre trying to start up.
This problem has been there since I had a couple of instances of Sasser, but
now I'm clean (apparantly).

This seems to happen every time i turn on my PC, have to then manually load
AVG and turn on the control centre. Although sometimes the app is simply
crashing randomly and giving me this message as well.

Does anybody know what is it / how to solve it? Perhaps a full re-install is
the easiest way, or could it be down to Sasser is some way?

Thanks in advance for replies.
Grant

I have seen this error several times on machines infected with the Sasser
worm.
Check for this infection... sarc.com has a great removal tool for it.

Yeah, I know, it only began with the Sasser virus hitting my computer.
However, I can find no evidence of the virus still being present.

Checked registry, no entry for it to run when startup (unless it is
windrive32.exe)?

No examples of avserve.exe or avserve2.exe on the machine. AVG comes up
clean every time, although it is ALWAYS terminated after opening, or
re-configured to not open upon startup!

I've heard that Sasser is typically accompanied by the installation of a
backdoor like agobot. You probably have something else (malware) on the
system that wants to disable the av.

I'd copy the av software to another name and run it. Also try several
different av's because, reportedly, AVG misses a lot.

Jason,

I tried renaming the executable for AVG and it was promptly disabled when
run.

I'm not sure on the malware thing. I have Adaware, fully up to date, as well
as Spybot, fully up to date. I also run Spywareblaster in the background.
Haven't found a dot of spyware on my system for weeks. Just this bloody
Sasser.

I'm now thinking about a ful re-install of AVG though I'm not certain that
will weild spectacular results.

See if you can get to one of these sites and run an
online scan.
Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php

If you can't get to one of them go
to: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

on another computer and download the "stinger" to a floppy
and run it on the infected computer.

After you get past the problem, you might want to
try this,
Microsoft has a free trial that is good for a year,
It includes an antivirus and a firewall.
www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/

Hope this helps,
Tom

Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the AVG? It might be that the
Sasser may have corrupted some files. But, did you check the AVG Virus
Vault to see if there is anything in there yet? AVG moves all viruses it
finds to the VIrus Vault.

I'd check the virus vault first, then do the uninstall and reinstall. See
if the problem persists.

Done that, yeah, no viruses in the vault. Re-installing isn't working :/

If you have not done so yet, download and run the following:.

First do this one if you haven't already: It's possible you have a hijacker:

HiJackThis: - Free

Go to
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html ,

and download HiJackThis. Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the
Temp folder, doubleclick HiJackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button. Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix
anything yet.

Then go here to post you log:
http://forum.aumha.org/

Go to the HiJackThis section on the forum list and click to open. You can
post as a guest, or create a logon profile. It's also a good site to keep
for reference. The experts there will analyze the log and report back the
results. Please allow at least a days time for a response.

Remember, you must return to the HJT site to get your answer.

While waiting for a reply on your HJT log, download and run the following,
if you have not done so already. It's very good.

Trend Micro Housecall - Free
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

In case it might be malware, then download these two, update them and then
run them both, if you have not already done so. Often what one does not
find the other does.

SpyBot Search & Destroy: Free

or

AdAware: Free
