I have used AVG for a good while now and have it set to scan my emails. I
have seen several posts in this and other groups recommending not to have it
scan emails because it is not needed. Can someone explain why this might
the case?

I run behind a router and XP's firewall is not active for the connection.

Thank you.

It is an added line of defense.

If it is working, leave it be. If it is not working you can turn it off. A
particular email will then be checked upon opening the mail (after it has
been downloaded to your computer), instead of being checked during the
download process (prior to the email making it to your in-box).

Some nasty stuff can infect your computer just by opening the email to view
it. You don't have to perform any additional steps to be infected. Email
scanning will/may delete these emails before you have the chance to have
this occur.

Thank you very much, Richard.
