AVG causes Windows98 to always restart

I've installed AVG's free anti-virus, build 344 (21 Oct 05) and since
then the PC always restarts, even when commanded to 'shut down'

On the shutdown process, it sorta ends Windows (plain vanilla 98), but
then it's back to the OEM screen (Compaq) and Windows again.

I've tried various suggestions, like disabling fast shutdown. Still
always restarts.

If I uninstall AVG anti-virus, the shutdown works again.

I've installed/uninstalled AVG twice, and with the same results
(install=always restarts, uninstall=shutdown works).

Other point: When the AVG was installed, when I went through the
pseudo-shutdown, if I tapped on F1 or F8, I'd get a 301 Keyboard error,
meaning no opportunity to get to the BIOS or Safe Mode. It seems like
there is something on the order of a system error during shutdown
triggering a restart, but I'm mostly guessing here.

Any suggestions welcome.

Try re-downloading again. Then reinstalling it

I was happy downloading the update up until a month or 6 weeks ago. Then
when I downloaded the engine update onto my Win98 vanilla machine it
crashed before starting every time. I have Win98SE machines that run OK
with the new program so what I do now is download the sig updates onto
those machines and then transfer the updated virus sig file by floppy to
my Win98 machine. I have given up on updating the engine part of AVG
past any more advanced version than I have at present ( 7.0.338) because
it just doesn't work on this OS. If sig files and engine ever become
incompatible I will either have to upgrade my OS or switch to something
else to scan for viruses on this Win98 computer.

I installed AVG to a fresh installation of Win98SE and did
all the updates. Now running AVG version 7.1.431 with no
problems. It must be conflicting with another program or
driver.

I just tried installing the update on my Win98 machine that I downloaded
from the AVG website. This upgrades the AVG engine to 7.1.361. It
works OK with my Win98SE machines. I thought I would take the plunge
and try it on my Win98 machine.

The bug I've been getting with AVG on win98 has been happening for 2
months now during which time I have avoided upgrading my AVG and only
putting on SIG file updates. During that time you would think that if
AVG were still supporting Win98 they would have done something about it.

Well ... guess what ... they haven't done a damn thing. No sooner was
my computer booting up for the first time with the 7.1.361 update than
it had crashed.

Win98 users.... AVG has left the building.

Win98SE works fine. The problems are with Win98 original version.
