AVG / Avast query

Hi

Can I run AVG Free Edition alongside Avast ? I'm fed up of the update
situation with AVG, even going to their site to download direct has become
problematic. I was thinking of trying Avast but dont want to uninstall AVG
just yet.

I did just that on my w98 machine.Its easier if your gonna do that to use
avast as a resident scanner and AVG as on demand.Disable the resident shield
in control panel and also untick the outlook express plugin.If you using 98
untick the boot up scanner to.Also untick the avgcc32.exe (i believe its
that),throuh start>run>msconfig>startup.Im not sure whwther XP has msconfig?
or some other command to get to the startup entries.Do these before
installing avast as avast may detect avg otherwise ,and prevent
installation.You will still be able to update AVG and perform on demand
scans but the resident shield /email plugin will not be working.

the scanning feature of AVAST cannot run if AVG is running, while I was
testing AVAST I disabled AVG in start-up. As long as you kept your install
file you could always re-install anyway as your serial is held in AVG
(info?)

IMHO you should just go ahead and un-install AVG as they are not treating
the update issue with any seriousness and AVAST does a fine job.

I am running nav2003 on my xp partition. I have two other partitions running
a copy of xp and win98se. I tried out avast, but with my setup there is a
conflict with my pegasus setup between the main xp partition and other two
so I installed avg into those. Tested an email with virus attachment. AVG
didn't remove it but made me run a complete scan before I got option to fix.
Nav catches downloads very fast. Is this the way avg works - I don't like
it, takes too long. Does anyone know what avast does when in sees a virus in
an attachment. Until the license runs out on nav I'll leave things as is,
but I would like to replace nav for a free checker since I use mailwasher
and won't normally see a virus anyway. Updates to avg have not been a
problem using modified url.ini.

Yep, unlike AVG Avast warns you before it you can do anything to the
message. Of course it depends on what your settings are. I've
customized all the settings on my avast.

Thanks, but my complaint was that AVG didn't really do anything except tell
me I had to scan the whole system to get rid of the attachment (which was
saved on the hd). I think I would prefer Avast, some have complained about
it slowing things down, but I don't see any differences on any of them in
that regard.

AVGs email scanner scans the inbox.dbx folder after the mail has
arrived.Avast scans the mail through its server using specific ports ,like
nortons.Avast has the better email scanner.AVG doesnt really have one.Avast
on slower and older systems (like mine ) with little memory does slow things
down more than AVG but imo offers the better protection.
