Greetings,

Running AVG 6. I have it set to automatically download the updates in
the wee hours of the morning, but I would like for it to also
automatically INSTALL the updates. I have an extremely old and slow PC
and it takes about 15-20 minutes for it to install the updates. Is
there a way to do an auto install too?

Thanks!

the way that AVG has been lately it can take that long on a fast PC with a
BB connection!

If you want something that can reliably download & install updates then
switch to Avast!

I find that after downloading the updates I have to quit AVG then re-open it
for the updates to install.

I also have found that recently the automatic update in AVG 6 free version
does not work. So if you go to the home page
(http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe) and then to the
"differential update" area, you can download what you need, put it into the
correct AVG file on your hard drive and then run the program it updates as
usual. I expect Grisoft have stopped automatically updating on the free
version because they want us to try Version 7.

It does work, but not always. I have only been using AVG for a couple of
days as a stop gap while my usual computer is down for repair. I have just
updated in what seems to be a normal time. I just assume their server is
getting too many hits. I like the program but will take a look at avast on a
test partition on my other computer when I get it back. I normally run NAV,
which contrary to comments from the group I find works well with no
noticeable degradation in machine performance over EzTrust, but will
re-evaluate when license runs out..

I read a tip a while back for the "Slow or No Auto Update" that said to
change the url.ini file to this, which I did, and now it downloads the
updates immediately and fast, what it does is adds additional update
sites to download from.:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=3

But my problem is not that, it checks for and downloads the updates just
fine during the wee hours of the morning, but when I go to the computer
in the morning it is sitting there waiting for me to click the "ok" or
"install"(can't remember which one)button to install the update and
that's where my old pc labors. The pc is so slow that it takes about
15-20 minutes to install the update after its been downloaded. It would
be nice if it would install the update without me having to click "ok"
or "install".

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Perhaps you can do something clever with "scheduled tasks"? I'm not sure
what the command line is but it should be possible to set up a small BAT
file to reboot your PC sometime during the night which might or might not
complete to update for you.

I've just tried it on my PC (Win98se) and after the reboot, the files are
installed but you *still* have to resart AVG but that's a relatively quick
process.

Just a thought...

Simply open the url.ini file located in Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6 delete
the contents and replace with the following:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=Main (Fast)
2=Free (Slow)
3=Alternate
4=DNSless 1
5=DNSless 2
6=DNSless 3

Okay, what does this do?

Others here: Is this legit?

(No offense to you, Locke Nash Cole, and thanks for the "fix" if it
turns out to be one. But I've not seen you posting here, and I'm REAL
hesitant about changing the addresses any of my programs go to for
automatic updates, based on advice given in a newsgroup.)

If you are feeling very cautious then rename your current 'url.ini' file to
'oldurl.ini' and then take the text in the 'fix', paste into txt file,
rename to url.ini and dump it in the avg folder. In truth though it doesn't
do any harm.

It is irrelevant whether or not it is legal, it only matters that you can
get an update

Read all the other posts in this group about the same thing with the same
advice. all it does is allow you to connect to other grisoft servers to get
a connection.

Hey this works - I like the Main (Fast) option! I think I can uninstall
Avast again and revert to my original preference of AntiVir and AVG.
