I am using the free version of AVG-Antivirus and running it along with
McAfee Security Centre and everything is running fine, except for one thing,
when AVG. downloads its updates. Once it updates the computer screen freezes
and I have to switch off the computer using the on-off button on the
computer as the keyboard freezes as well and I cant log off properly, which
is not good thing to do at the any time. Can anyone tell me what is wrong
here? Thanks for any advice.

Please let us know what operating system you are running.

By the way, WinXP SP2 has a Security Centre.

Thanks for your reply YoKenny. I already had the Microsoft security Centre
running as well as McAfee and AVG. But I still have the problem with the
keyboard and screen freezing up. YoKenny what are you advising me to do?

Do you have McAfee and AVG both running real-time?

This could very well be your cause of 'freezing up'. Never run more
than one a-v program at a time; they conflict with each other.

Don't run McAfee Security Centre.

You should not run two on-access scanners at the same time as it has a
stong tendency to cause them to conflict. There is really no point in
doing so anyhow. Just choose the better of the two and go with that.

Thanks for the reply BTS. The reason I am using both AVG and McAfee is
simply because of the amount of Spyware and Viruses that's been hitting my
computer recently. I think it all comes from my daughter downloading music
and her constantly sending messages via MSN to her friends? I'm thinking its
not a bad thing if I have to keep rebooting when AVG updates if I avoid all
the Virus I've had on the computer recently, I was just hopping I could stop
the freezes? he problem now is, will I damage the computer?
----------

Thanks for the reply. I suppose if I have to choose I will pick McAfee as
I've just renewed it for 12 month. The thing is, they seem to be working
fine together it's only when AVG. updates I have to reboot. I'm sure there
is an answer somewhere that would stop this freeze-up?

Yes, but, are you running both of them (in the background?) at the
*same* time? You did not answer that question.

Ah well. Teenager? Teenagers are untrainable. Live with it, or get her
her own computer.

You should not have to reboot when just receiving a data update.

You said you purchased/renewed McAfee. Good luck with that hog. said:

Physically? No. Software-wise? Can't say.

BTW, please don't top-post, and learn to trim. Thanks.

Yes I am running both in the background, what do you suggest I do, and how
would I do it?

She has here own computer, I gave her my old one last year when I bought
this one but it runs on Win98se. I don't think it has the specifications to
run on XP and to be truthful even if it could I don't want to pay another
£70 to buy XP for an old computer. I did however buy an 'Linksys wireless G
Router' to try and get both computers online, as I'm connected with
broadband through NTL (Don't say it?) but I failed to get it up and running,
as I'm still a plonker when it comes to this sort of thing.

Tell me BTS have I trimmed and posted this correctly? 'Fingers X'

You have recieved the answer. It's up to you whether you ignore it or not.

In McAfee there should be in the Options or Tools menu a clickable entry
that enables the "Run Active Scanning" or something like that.
Disable that by clicking on the check box.

If you want to use McAfee then use the procedure on the other anti virus
(AV) application.

Note: If you want to run a full scan with the in-active AV then in-activate
the active AV as it will cause conflicts while they are both active.

My ISP replaced their modem with a SpeedStream Wireless router that has a
built in firewall because they got fed up with their customers getting
hijacked and becoming spam blasting zombies. :)

To set up the router is a piece of cake but the Wireless part was a pain.
A very helpfull support technician walked me through the Wireless setup and
I have my AMD system using it in the other room.

The key to setting up a router is the local connections.
The DSL modem must plug into the Wan port usually port 5 at the left end of
the router.
Then each system's Ethernet cable plugs into one of the other ports.

Its best to power everything down then power on the modem and wait untill it
becomes ready then power on the router and wait untill it becomes ready then
power on each system one after another waiting untill they each become
ready.

Scottie, you trimmed and posted correctly. :)

You may want to read the following and follow its directions to install
prevention protection for yours and your daughter's systems:

I know what you mean about teenage daughters as I had a16 year old that
barely made it to 17 because she knew everything.
Her immortality was shattered when she was in a car axident with 3 other
friends and they were all seriously hurt but thankfully my daughter was not
as serious as the others.
She is now 25 and has completed university with honers and is working for a
large banking firm and really enjoying it because she is getting lots of
training on loans and mortgage counseling and approvals.

Yokenny told you how to disable one of them from running. Never run two
anti-virus programs at the same time.
She has here own computer,

What? You did not state in your previous post that your daughter has a
separate, different computer. After all, we are not peeking into your
home. You wrote it like her actions was what you suspected was the cause
of *your* computer freezing.

If it is more than .. four? .. years old, don't bother upgrading 98SE to
WinXP. The hardware probably won't handle XP. Recommended 512 MB ram
and so forth.

Almost. You've trimmed the attributes as to who said what. Stop doing
that and you can uncross your fingers...

Yes, my daughter has her own computer BTS, but she has to use my computer to
go online, which is almost all her wakening hours. That's why my oldest
daughter bought me the 'Linksys wireless G Router' so I could get on my own
computer some time, but its just lying there doing nothing.

Ok, Version 3.0. She has her own computer but uses yours instead. So you
may be a victim of teenage cluelessness after all.

It appears you are on cable. "Organization: ntl Cablemodem News Service"

Does this router have hard-wired jacks? I think so. You probably got a
Cat 5 cable with the router, get another. Power everything down. Plug
the cable modem into the Internet WAN port of the router, then connect a
LAN port to your computer's NIC. Power up the cable modem, wait a bit,
power up the router, wait a bit, power up the computer. Hopefully, it
should find the internet.

If your daughter's PC has a NIC, plug it into another LAN port, boot it
up and connect.

There are more steps regarding security, which the instructions should
tell you about.

Do the AVG update manually and just before you do, disable the McAfee active
antivirus scanning first. Then, after the update completes, you may choose to
enable the McAfee active scanning.
Although McAfee is a resource hog, it is still consistantly rated in the top
several antvirus programs.
