Is the free version good enough to protect my PC?
Julie

It's fine for the home user, and I've been using it myself for the past
couple of years. Recommended, and I have no connection with Grisoft.

Having said that, AVG is not the only - or necessarily the 'best' for your
specific requirements. So here is a link to some comparative information:

I *bought* McAfee and ditched AVG 6.0 and Kerio (free firewall). I promptly
caughter the Blaster worm, reformatted, reloaded with AVG and Kerio, and
have not had another problem. If I shell out any more hard-earned money for
AV software, it will be AVG.

I've used AVG only for quite some time and so far have had no problems
with any virus -
but then again, would I know if I harboured one?

You shouldn't simply trust your AV-program.
I have run without one for over a month and did not get infected.
Anti-Virus programs should be the 'last obstacle' for a virus, and your own
thinking one of the first.
1. Update software often, especially MS stuff
2. Do not open emails that look suspicious, and certainly not attachments
3. If you go to a site you don't really trust, use a safer program or take
some kind of precaution
4. Customize the settings of your Internet programs

well, I have updated Windows XP HOME SP1 with some few updates (some
against some Worms). Otherwise I read more than often that many users
updating every of the Microsoft updates get troubles with
installing/updating and/or in ways that some applications suddenly
became unworkable and/or showing miraculous sideeffects. So I'm a little
bit careful to realize every update offered by Microsoft.
