Also it removed the icon from the right side of the taskbar while it was
doing this update and when finished put it back. Seems it did a program
update and version update to 7.5.476 and 269.9.2/858

Thanks for the tipoff Robin. I checked for updates and finally the big
'recommended' update was there - loads of bits related to the firewall and
goodness knows what else. It did its disappearing/reappearing icon trick for
me, too.

Made a restore point beforehand just in case, but it seems ok. Did a quick
system areas scan - fine. Firewall correctly alerts me to unauthorised
program internet access. Fingers crossed. Looks good so far.

I never noticed there was a standby firewall issue - I suppose the fact that
I never leave my machine on standby must have something to do with that!!

Here's a slight oddity. Normally the AVG Internet Security Suite updates
itself silently every morning, but this morning just as it was about to
update, the AVG coloured square icon greyed out and I got a popup from the
update manager alerting me to an error state, which disappeared seconds
later once the update had completed.

Why the popup this morning, Robin? Any idea?

could have been a glitch
could have been your computer was in sleeping mode and when it tried to do
an update could not
I see that alot because mine goes into sleeping mode
could have been it tried to connect to the server and it could not and came
up with an error mode- i have seen this alot too. As long as it was able to
correct itself I would not be concerned

The only other times I've seen this behaviour are when I've been away for a
few days, and switch on for the first time so that there are several days'
worth of updates for the program to catch up on.
Thanks for the reassurance. If this is all I have to worry about, I guess
i'm doing OK.
