I am using AVG Free edition and updating regularly .
But I am not able to find out how many viruses it
is protecting against .
Is there any way to know that ?
I doubt it. Irrelevant anyway. There are scores of thousands of
viruses. It would be pointless to try to compare the lists,
particularly since some AV companies name viruses differently than
others.
AVG has a "Virus Encyclopedia" on their site that allows you to look
up particular viruses and can also search alias names for a given
virus.
As long as AVG continues to be certified as detecting 98-100% of the
viruses "in the wild", it should be adequate for personal use, if not
corporate use. Always remembering that any AV can let one slip
through.
Some tests indicate AVG is not as good as Norton or McAfee but the
problems people have with those products vis-a-vis interference with
other software is enough to make me steer clear of them.
I get about a half dozen to a dozen virus-laden emails daily from SBC
DSL email these days, and AVG so far has not missed any - though
almost all of them are Netsky variants. I use Eudora as an email
client which doesn't run anything so for the most part I'm not too
worried.
It's usually a good idea to have a different backup AV scanner and run
a separate manual scan periodically to make sure nothing has slipped
by your main scanner.
