AVG Anti-Virus

I currently use Norton 2005 to protect my desktop, but have been told that
AVG Free is not only free, but also a better product. Is this true? Would it
be a good move for me to switch over to AVG?

Better move to switch to AVAST (www.avast.com). Keep in mind that no matter
how good "free" antivirus solutions may be, there will always be
compromises.

ive been using AVG for agrees, picks up what it should, i had Nortan, and
after 1month deleted it, slowing my p.c down big time, bin it and us AVG

I agree with Peter. I have used Avast for 3 yrs. now with no
infection-ever. I cannot say the same for AVG which I used before
getting a virus that it(AVG) couldn't handle. I just installed eTrust
on 2 of my systems (win2000pro+XPpro) and I like it a lot.

Thanks Dave - it's interested that you say Norton slowed your PC down,
because I've been wondering for ages about the speed of my PC. Launching
Explorer seems to take longer than it should and I notice that other
people's PCs seem to download pages faster than mine, even though they have
the same ADSL connection. I'd convinced myself there was a virus/worm/trojan
lurking somewhere but haven't had any positives with any scans I've done
using Norton, AdAware or online scanners. Maybe the problem is my Norton?

I use Avast. I did an online scan from Norton and TrendMicro. Both found
Psyme Trojan which Avast does not see. Apparently this is a very low level
threat.
When I had Norton installed, I didn't notice undue impact on performance.

That is why I recommend that you scan your system weekly with a few
different scanners,what one misses the others may catch,see-

Norton2005 is very resoruce hungry bloated piece of software, my own
experieince has shown it to miss many viruses that avg picks up.

Norton seems to spread itself to other areas of the OS, often strange
intermittant problems with the internet or email are solved by removing the
whole norton package.

Norton 2005 will work much better with a machine that has more then 256mb of
memory (256 or below is fairly unusable), but it still slows down boot up
and general running of the machine.

I have found that the update process and scanning options, at default
settings are more likely to protect a none techie user then norton.

If you are not swimming in ram, then yes this will be norton.
It might be worth checking out Hijack this, an excellent tool which can
analyse what software it attatched to your explorer/iexplorer, make sure you
dont have any nasties starting up with explorer.
