AVG and Intellimouse

About a month ago, I started getting a problem with my MS Intellimouse
Optical. The 'snap-to-default' option stopped working.

I tried the various solutions in the MS KB (185663 & 264595), but without
success. I also upgraded the SW to 4.12, but this didn't cure it either.

I've now figured out what I'm sure is causing it, but does anyone have a
solution?

At the time the problem started, I had just got rid of N*rt*n AV (don't
ask!) and installed AVG 6 Free Edition. I think this is causing the problem,
because when I close AVG, the 'snap' function returns. When I start AVG and
the main screen comes up, it still works.

The AVG main screen says that Control Center is not fully functional. As
soon as I click to activate and open Control Center, the 'snap' function
stops working.

AVG Free Edition is not supported by Grisoft, so I could only ask them as a
last resort.

Any thoughts on this?

Don't use that option! then. Is there a reason why you need it? Doubt AVG is
the culprit. Try reinstalling drivers for the mouse.

I feel cheated if I can't use an option I've (in effect) paid for simply
because some dokey twerp can't code.

Convenience. Well, usually. I have to disable it when working in Front Page,
because the default button is hardly ever the one I want, but apart from
that...

Circumstantial evidence suggests that, if AVG isn't the source of the
problem, then the way it's interacting with something else *is*.
Try reinstalling drivers for the mouse.

Dunnit. Several times (that's what the KB articles tell you to do, amongst
other things).

I got a reply from someone on 24hoursupport.helpdesk who said they were
having the same problem. I think I'll contact Grisoft and see what they say.

Update : Grisoft want nothing to do with it, because "AVG Free Edition is
not supported".

Avast here I come, I think...

Well, I've now installed Avast instead of AVG, and my 'snap-to-default' is
working fine now. Draw your own conclusions from this...

I will do! I'd say it's the programming of M&S intellipoint software! Never
use their software, although I have an intellipoint optical mouse, alway use
Logitech software, better and works better! You seem to believe AV
programmes interfere with M&S products? Not surprised really it's M&S IMHO

The potential for Backweb to spy on your activities is to great
for me to use 'any' product that installs a Backweb function.
Here's an excerpt from a rather large file I have gathered:

Beware also of anything using SMTP because I have heard
that it can potentially be used for worm activity. :O)

HTTP can also be hazardous, check out the "drive by" adware
and spyware resources.

TFTP and FTP are also suspect - we wouldn't want any of
those potential security risks to remain.

....should I go on?
