AVG 7 update requires system upgrade???
alt.comp.freeware comp.sec.misc

hi all,

just recently attempted to install AVG7 and got a message
about halfway through stating the install was aborted
because I need to upgrade to either IE 5.01 or
Microsoft Office 2000. I currently have IE 4.01 SP1 ver 4.72.3110.0
and OFFICE 8.0, (neither of which I use) and WIN98.

It's old stuff but it suits me and I dont want to
fiddle with MS unless I have to. Will the required software
even run on 98?

Anybody heard of this or know a way around it??

TIA

Try to do a custom install and de-select email scanning or email plugins.

Just a thought.

I don't know the AVG7 story -- but similar messages do surround
many softwares which need the system to have a minimum version of
the comctl32.dll. It's a file which MSFT evidently does not permit
third-party developers to redistribute. If you don't already have
v5.8 + of comctl32.dll, you should do an update.

If that's not the story, I've no other ideas. Grisoft doesn't say a thing in
its "system requirements" mentions.

I just spotted a more encompassing download, which I'd recommend.

: Vcredist.exe Installs the Latest Run-Time Components for Visual C++ Applications
: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;259403 (for w95/98)

That package includes comctl32.dll. Re the contained mfc* & msvc* dlls,
I noticed via Filemon that the AVG7 installer was extremely interested in
those. Tho' probably its installer takes care of installing the right ones
there when needed -- it's still just as well to have things up-to-date on
your own. I note too, that the package has the oleaut32.dll + olepro32.dll
pair. I've had a repeated history of probs related to those last two, when
the wrong versions were in my sysdir.

hi all,

thanks for all the info. based on what I have seen with problems
installing on win98, I think I'll wait awhile for a debugged
version.

someone mentioned trying a custom install, but it doesnt even
let me get that far, it just cuts itself off.

BTW, I emailed grisoft and haven't heard back. In the .pdf
download of the documentation, they state they do not provide
tech support for the free version...
