AVG 7.5 and Thunderbird or Outlook

Has anyone else had POP3 connect issues with the email scanner in AVG
7.5 and Thunderbird and Outlook? I randomly getting messages from these
programs that say they can't communicate with my POP3 server.

The way I get around this is to DISABLE the email scanner in AVG 7.5 and
then re-enable it. I don't have to re-boot. Then it works just fine.

My OS is XP Pro w SP2.

This is annoying. I just wanted to know if I am not the only one seeing
this problem. Thanks...

There is no need to have your a-v program scan Incoming or Outgoing
email. As long as you have the resident program running, it will prevent
you from executing any virus-laden file (that it knows about).

All modern viruses have their own built-in SMTP engines, and will
quietly spew in the background while your computer is not busy.

I see many posts in my ISP's local newsgroups asking why (usually McAfee
or Norton) screws up their mail sending. Turn off the scan, and the
problem disappears.

I guess if I don't need email scanning, then why am I using it...good
point! I'll turn the darn thing off! Thanks...

Easier said than done. Every time I boot-up, it re-enables itself.

How do I turn off the email scanning so it stays off?

This would be a question for AVG, its Help file, or perhaps another user
of the product can chime in here.

My current a-v application has no problem keeping unselected options
off. (Avast)

I'm still using 7.1 from laziness so this may not apply to 7.5: start
AVG Control Panel, click E-mail Scanner, click Properties, select the
Plugins tab, for each installed plugin, if more than one, in turn
select Configure for both "Use the shared test configuration" and "Use
the personal test configuration", unchecking both "Check incoming
mail" and "Check outgoing mail", and OK your way out of all. If that
doesn't work, re-run the installation program, select "Add/Remove" and
remove any and all e-mail plugins. To be sure, you might check the AVG

Doing a "repair" install of 7.5 over 7.1 still gets me "E Mail not
installed" :-)

Do you want the e-mail scanner installed? Then, uninstall AVG, during
which select "Remove user settings". Restart the computer when
prompted. Reinstall AVG. If you want only some or a particular email
scanning plugin during installation select custom install and check or
uncheck those you want or don't want.

Are you saying AVG cannot selectively start and stop services without
uninstalling and reinstalling the entire program?

If so, this is going to be a prominent note on a couple of my web pages.
Please let me know. Thanks.

No. Through the Control Panel one can start, stop, and control
services. But, if as seems the case with the poster I was replying to,
the service isn't installed, then that service, of course, cannot be
started or stopped. HTH.

Ah, I see. I didn't realize you could selectively not *install* services
during the initial install. The older versions I'm familiar with didn't
work that way, as I recall. Thanks.

AVG Free 7.1 didn't ask which components to install, as I recall, but I
probably used auto install, might have had a "custom" option.
Put Free 7.5 on top of it, so it didn't ask either.

However, I had no problem turning off email scanning in 7.1, and just
tried it in 7.5, no probs there either (even after reboot), although it
does notify you from system tray that it is off (once, after a reboot).
IOW, I didn't have to uninstall the plugin to simply have it NOT scan
email. I have it set to scan incoming only; I could certainly live
without that, but it doesn't slow anything down appreciably.

James I had a similar problem whilst testing AVG 7.5.... I think
Grisoft have have sorted out this issue, Personally I just uninstalled
and re-installed as I did not have time to investigate further....maybe
a email to avg to detirmine exactly what it was..

7.1 also had selective install, and add/remove components by
re-running the install program. I believe 6 did, too, but I don't
recall for sure and am too lazy to look it up :-). Cheers!
