AVG provide an excellent free anti virus, with regular updates. This is
funded by the charge it makes for business purposes and to corporations. The
differences between the free and the not free one are quite small yet still
you want to steal from them?

If other software companies used the same business model.....
Imagine if Microsoft provided a version of XP that was free to use, just
limited in its scope (say, it only allowed to network two machines, no
domain access, would reboot every 24hrs to prevent usage as a server etc),
limited install and uninstall, but full internet access? Wouldnt the world
be a better place?

No, I would not want it to reboot every 24 hours.
Downloading a files or your are working on a
document. The activation scheme is bad enough and now they have
Windows validation.
