AVG 7.0.289 no way.....like some primadonna strutting the boards...........

The latest version of AVG Free seems very cumbersome. It struts across
emails like some primaddona. Sometimes it freezes up, and one has to re-boot
the PC. It used to be swift, in-obtrusive, and effective. Now it's all up
front slows down email downloads, and then decides to stop for no reason.
How do other people find it working etc. Thanks..John

It works OK for me, but then I run it like I've always run AVG -- on
demand only, without real-time monitoring.

(FWIW, though, this is on a computer that no one else uses. I update
manually every week or so, and/or prior to scanning anything
suspicious, and have had one virus infection -- over 5 years ago, from
a Word file attachment from a trusted source. That taught me to trust
no one, but it doesn't mean I need to devote system resources to
constant scanning and re-scanning.)

How about some more details about OS and email client?
XP, Outlook and AVG7 with no problems.

Disable the email scanner. It's fluff anyway -- the resident scanner
will catch anything you might inadvertently open or execute.

The installer provides an option to not install the email scanner, I chose
this as my free email services provide virus filtering and they are IMAP and
I think AVG can only scan POP.

I've been using AVG V7 for about a week with no problems on Windows 98SE
since my one year free Etrust (V7) licence expired.

It's also being run here on an XP machine (inluding email scanner) no problems
on that machine either.

I haven't noticed any difference in performance or stability. It hasn't
locked up once and email seems to download at the same speed as before.
I have it set to scan emails on download but not on send.

Using Outlook 2000 on Windows XP Pro

I've installed it -- without the email scanner -- on a W2K AMD 1.67G, an
XPpro K6-333, and a W98se P1 150mhz laptop. The first two have suffered
no noticeable performance hit; the laptop is slightly more cranky at
startup. :O)

Installed it on Windows 2000 with Outlook Express and Zone Alarm, full
install. About 2 weeks now, no problems.
 
I have downloaded and used every update since I installed AVG free about
two years ago, and have never encountered any problems. Windows XP SP2
is my OS, and my email client is Thunderbird which I started using a
couple of months ago. I understand some don't like the inconvenience of
the email scanning options, but I don't mind a bit of an extra wait if
it gives me a little more insurance. Also, AVG has never conflicted with
any of the other "anti" software on this computer - Ad-Aware, Spybot
S&D, A2, and ZoneAlarm.

On a 98SE box I have both AVG7 free and Avast4.5 running simultaneously with
no conflicts.
In addition AdawareSE, Spybot S&D, A2, SpywareBlaster and BHODemon run OK,
also no conflicts.
Resources 60% with 24 runnimg processes.
I'll stick with AVG7 free!

I've had trouble with AVG7 Free on my PIII running 98SE and Forte
Agent with cable modem. Old AVG6 was set to check for updates every
day around 8 AM when I would usually be on line and would pop up
momentarily and run the update or not and then disappear. I had test
scheduler disabled and would do manual scans. All was fine. AVG7 would
come up around 8 AM and check for updates. Whether there was an update
or not, it would do a complete scan, after which I would get error
messages on Forte Agent and AVG and have to reboot. This happened
even after I disabled the Scheduler. A couple of days ago I reset the
time of the scheduler for 2 AM, when the computer is never on, then
disabled the scheduler, also checked the settings of the updater, set
that to 2 AM and disabled that one, I think, and for the past two days
everything is quiet and I don't have to reboot. So if this works, I
will have to do manual updates as well as manual scans. Too bad
Grisoft is discontinuing AVG6.

That one will jump up and bite you in the ass before long. the only way
this works is if you use some degree of good sense in openeing attachments.
Also, this way you are not protected against any nasty HTML code, unless
you view only on plain text.

I just upgraded to AVG7 from AVG6 and am having hell with AVG and Zone
Alarm. As installed I was unable to access the internet at all (AVG Update,
Firefox, IE, OE). After closing, then restarting Zone Alarm, everything
works as normal. I have changed the startup several times looking for the
problem, but no matter what I select or unselect in the initial startup, I
still have this problem.

I have reloaded AVG7 and selected Repair. Still no help.

As long as I boot up, close Zone Alarm, then re-start Zone Alarm, it all
runs fine. I have used AVG6 for a long time now with no problems at all.

Windows 98ME (I know, I know)
XP 2000+
768MB
Zone Alarm 5.5.062.000
AVG 7.0.289

Any ideas?

Can I ask how. I have XP and Outlook Express and each time I use the email
scanner it seeks confirmation of the passwords to my accounts and then
doesn't accept them anyway and refuses to download anything.

Only suggestion I have is to dump Zone Alarm, a great firewall when it
works, but hell when it conflicts. I use Sygate
