Updated last night to latest version (yes, I've been having the
connection problems, as well), but everything rec'd okay...
6.0.639 asks for a complete restart, and when Win98SE was coming back
up, it reported a Registry error. Had to restart again...
Came back up the second time, no problems, version AVG is 6.0.639 &
virus DB is 408.

However... Today the PC is hanging if left idle for periods of time.
AVG Update Manager of OFF.

Anyone else having a problem with 6.0.639?

I haven't had those problems, but I have had trouble recently w/AVG free
edition, updating the new virus databases, so I've uninstalled it (version
prior to 6.0.639) & downloaded the one out now (v. 6.0.639), & I still can't
seem to access the AVG server by hitting "update" for the database
definitions. I now resort to manual downloading of the definitions from the
AVG website.

The voice of "hbb2102" drifted in on the cyber-winds,

No... No problems so far...
I the system did hang on a known "sound driver" error, one that I'd
rather not fix due to crap involved (don't ask). But I get that error
about once a week, and a reboot fixes it... So I'm not worried.

Rastapasta-
Hmmm. I'm not sure I can tell you what that reminds me of...

I think I've narrowed the connection problems to contention for the
Grisoft site because of all the recent viral (& anti-social) behavior. Keep
trying, as it eventually connects.

Okies, Thanx!!! Yeah, it seems that before I was having problems connecting,
I would connect ok, then every once in a while, there would be problems. But
then now, I can not connect at all, it seems. Then "Bob" said in an earlier
post, "In the "Download from server" box, type www.grisoft.com. It's less
busy and works more often for me."

Well, I have yet to figure out how to put the above addy in the box where it
says "connect to".
Oh well. I don't mind d/l--ing manual virus definitions. Thanx all!!!!!!!!!1

Save the following text in notepad as url.ini
copy file and paste in the AVG program folder

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=3

you now have three locations to update from

Hope this helps (at least is does for me).

Oh wow---Thanx a bunch---that did it!!!Thank you!!!

Well, let this put some more light on the subject. Updated, and now we've
done another Registry change, rebooted, and we're running 6.0.643...

Didn't get a good look @ what changed, but we'll see whether some other
problems get resolved. I was still "hanging" before the update...

I'm thinking it wasn't a "hang" though... Periodically the task manager
would respond to context switches (<ALT><TAB>) & <CTL><ALT><DEL> would
eventually bring up the task mgr dialogue... I'm wondering if something
wasn't just running CPU util up to 100%, and nothing else was getting in to
run...

More if I get it.

No joy.
