Every time I start my computer, avast disappears from the taskbar. I don't
know if it is running or not. Thanks in advance.

You need to adjust the view in Folder Options:

Click Start> My Computer.
Click the Tools menu> Folder Options, then the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders section, click the radio button for 'Show hidden
files and folders'.
Remove the checkmark from the box labeled 'Hide file extensions for known file
types'.
Press the Apply button, then the OK button, and close the My Computer window.

Now you should see the file as ashDisp.exe

I did everything you told me to do, but when I restarted my pc, it didn't
show up. I went to the web site and it said that if it still doesn't show up,
to put a shortcut of it in the start menu - which is what I had to do in
order to start it going again. I'll just have to remember to click on the
ashDisp.exe every time I start my pc. Thanks for the lelp. At least I know
it's working.

No, the web site says to put a shortcut to ashDisp.exe in the *StartUp* folder of
the Start Menu, so that it will start with Windows. Shortcuts in the StartUp folder
are run automatically when Windows starts.

Drag your shortcut over the Start button, using the left button of the mouse. While
continuing to hold the left mouse-button, the Start menu will pop up. Drag the icon
over Programs, then over StartUp, then into the Startup folder list and let go of
the button to add the shortcut to the list in the StartUp folder.

Thanks Glee. Everything is working now. I think one of the problems was that
I was on the phone with Sympatico about another issue and they told me to go
to the System Config. and disable everything. After that, I lost all my icons
next to the clock.

Avast is working fine now. Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.

Uh, yes....that would disable all your startups. Not very nice of them not to tell
you to re-enable them after the troubleshooting was completed.

Ideally, you should re-enable all your startups or at least all the necessary ones,
and delete the shortcut in the StartUp folder that we made. This assumes of course
that the Avast startup entry is still in msconfig's Startup tab to be turned back
on.

In msconfig> Startup tab, look for the entry named Avast! (which should point to the
path of ashDisp.exe). If it is there and is disabled (unchecked), go to your Start
menu> Programs> StartUp folder, delete the shortcut we put there; then enable the
Avast! entry in msconfig by putting a check in its box, click OK, and reboot.

What other items in msconfig do you still have disabled (unchecked)?
Are there any others that point to an Avast module?

Avast is showing checked in msconfig and everything seems to be working okay.
Everything is checked right now in misconfig. Short-cut in "start-up" has
been deleted. Thanks for the help.

Ok, glad to hear it. I probably should've had you check msconfig right off, but
silly me, I thought you would have menmtioned it in your original post. ;-)
<joking>

A lot of times folks forget until later that some change like that was made. I'm
glad you remembered and caught it.
