Avast uses a service to start its engine. Go to the Services and set the
AVAST service to either disable or manual. Reboot

Art,
Does it work for Win NT also? I'm assuming yes by what the page says.

Last night, I installed the current Avast freeware on my WinXP SP2 machine.
It seemed to install okay, and it would let me launch software, but then the
software could not be used. I had to use the power button to shut down. I
re-installed had the same result. I couldn't even uninstall without going to
Safe Mode.

BTW, I have been a fan of Avast, currently use it on my wife's Win98SE
machine, and have successfully used it on other machines.

I just checked, and it doesn't say that. It just says msconfig wasn't
included on NT, but it doesn't say the XP msconfig works on NT. Of
course, which NT version(s) is the question. Win 2K is a later NT
version (I think it's NT5). So if you have some earlier version of NT
it might be worth a try. But I have no idea of the risk involved in
trying it without having the ability to restore Windows from backup,
so don't blame me if something goes wrong :)

I've recently downloaded Win2k Pro, (which is a very good operating
system, incidentally), but it lacks some important facilities offered
by Win XP, such as 'msconfig.exe', without all the heavy consumption of
resources of your PC.

A good way of preventing any particular program from automatically
starting after boot-up of Win2k is as follows.

Open C:\WINNT\Regedit.exe, find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, which is one of the
major 5 registry keys (Hives) listed on the left. Under this Hive
(HKLM) find the path Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run.
Under the 'Run' key, listed on the right are all the applications that
start up automatically after boot. Simply delete the one you want to
prevent starting by highlighting the appropriate listed application on
the right, eg avast.exe, then exit Regedit.exe. You can use this method
to add applications such as Word if you want that to start up at boot.

Be careful not to delete anything else in the Registry. Alternatively,
download MsConfig.exe as explained, which is more user friendly, and
use that, but it's not really necessary.

Is Avast Services only on the paid for version or on the free version?
I have the free version and can't find anything about Services. I
have version 4.6 home edition.

If you google on win2k and msconfig, you will find many citations stating
that the msconfig program from winXP can be used in win2K. I have been using
it on my win2k pro setup as long as I remember. Here is one example
http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm Alternatively, you can
edit the registry.
