If using Zone Alarm, Avast recommends using the localhost/12080 Webshield
solution in lan settings with their 4.6.652 update. Is anyone doing this,
or are all you Avast users still turning off the Webshield?

Can someone tell me the advantage or disadvantages of using their proxy
server setup?

I'm using free Avast 4.6.652 with free ZoneAlarm 5.5.094, with the Webshield
active in Avast using Normal sensitivity, Internet Explorer browser, Windows
XP Home. Insofar as I'm aware, the Webshield in Avast works OK. How would I
know if it didn't?

What/where is "localhost/12080 Webshield solution in lan settings"? That's
Greek to me. I'm willing to look up my settings and report back if you'll
tell me exactly where to find them.

I did a little reading over on the Avast forum and noticed a related thread
on the first page. Their recommendation is to turn OFF the anti-virus
monitoring and email protection in ZoneAlarm, which apparently sidesteps
this issue. Those ZoneAlarm features aren't needed for it to act a firewall.
You can read or search for more info in the Avast database at

I guess you can disregard my comments above. I took another look and
probably got it wrong. Read the Avast forum info and decide for yourself! It
looks like they're saying to "Disable Cookie and Ads blocking in ZA", but I
don't think I have that in my free ZA version, but am not sure. I probably
shouldn't have commented in the first place, because I don't know what I'm
talking about here.
