Avast! Updating?

Does Avast! (free version) automatically update or do you have to do it
manually? If you have to do it manually, how? Also, is there a setting to
to automatic system scans, or does that have to be done manually? I don't
have it here to look at as I use NAV. This question is for my b-i-l.
 
I did an evaluation and it updates automatically with a message when done.
Don't know about manual update. I prefer AVG.

Avast has options for automatic or manual update of program and virus
data base. You can schedule scans or scan on demand. It also has a
background scan that can be turned on or off that continually scans
during idle time. And it has an internet option that can scan incoming
and outgoing E-mail.

Checks for updates when going on line if you are on dial-up.
There have sometimes been more than one per day recently.
Used to use AVG, but find Avast much better.
Can be set to scan mail and downloads.

Is there a site which compares Avast against other AV products?

Automaticly and often. You just have to register once every year.
