What do you call 'slow'??

My daughter has Avast on a 98SE, Pentium-MMX 200MHz, 256MB RAM, and although
it's slightly slower than when it runs on the Athlon 2000 with XP Pro, it is
still faster than AVG and takes up less resources.

Could it be another application you're running in the background??

Try a "repair",if that doesn't help,uninstall and install again.

No other apps are running in the backround. It's a clean install of 98se
with updates/patches done and that's it no other apps have even been
installed as of yet. Response time is slow. For instance, when trying to do
any configuration changes, it takes awhile for the options to actually come
up for me to change them. Resident memory protection as an example I click
on it and it takes about 30 sec. to come up and then when I try to move the
slider bar it doesn't move.

I have noticed even on XP Pro machine it takes a few seconds for the
configuration menu to show up, and also during changes. It is slower on
98SE of course, but that just seems to be the programme..

Also, when I first installed Avast I noticed that all programmes had slowed
down dramatically - to a ridiculous speed, even on the XP machine. I
un-installed and re-installed it and all was fine then. I think there is
some slight speed affect due to Avast scanning starting files first, but it
is rather a small sacrifice compared to a virus!!

If I recall correctly AVG7 also slowed things down a little, maybe not as
much as Avast, but it seems that Avast does a better job so perhaps it is
just something you have to accept?

Cheers

PS - On XP pro it takes about 17sec for the control panel to load after
starting it, which includes the memory scan.. There is a couple of seconds
after the memory scan finishes before anything shows up. On the 98SE
machine, which is naturally slower, it takes a bit longer...
