Avast Settings

What are the best settings to use with Avast Pro that offer reasonable
protection without slowing down the system?

I notice with the default settings it takes a lot longer to execute most
programs, even things like Word take longer to start. I presume this is the
standard shield and the "scan executed programs" option as if I disable that
things seem to work faster, but will that still offer reasonable protection
against a virus?

Hmm... What PC system are you using? I have thighend avast! above the
standard, and I still can't notice any noticable delays at all here
(I scan lot more file types and hav x'ed on every access type)

Athlon XP2000, 256MB, WinXP Pro SP2. Also have ZoneAlarm Pro, Spybot and
Ad-Aware.

I know it is this setting as if I tick "scan executed programs" everything
takes a lot longer to start up, but why I don't know expecially if others
(like you) don't experience that!

I'd also like to put Avast on my daughters PC and the PC down in my radio
shack, but first I'd like to get it going OK here (both presently run AVG
Free). Those computers are (respectively):

Pentium 233-MMX, 256MB, Windows 98SE
Pentium 200-MMX, 32MB (slightly more actually I think??), Windows 98SE

Both of these also run ZoneAlarm Pro.

I use a P4 2.53Ghz, 512RAM. Free ZA, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware.
takes a lot longer to start up, but why I don't know expecially if others

Well, I went straight to avast! from McAfee, maybe I'm used to the
delay (we use AV software at work as well). Word 2000 takes about 2
secs to launch. MSIE 6 about 1 sec. Acrobat Viewer about 1.5 secs.

Thanks for your reply. I un-installed it, re-booted and then re-installed
and for some reason it seems to be working better now, so ?????????

Anyway, I was using AVG Free but got sick of the problems I was having with
the new AVG7, especially the e-mail scanner.. Besides, Avast seems to have
a good rep on here and other NG..

Hopefully things will keep working this way now!
