Hi!

I´m using avast 4.5.561. Very often after doing a manual update I get
the message:

Informations about actual update:
Last error: The packet is damaged
- Vps: Updated
(last version: 0509-6, Update-version: 0510-0)

Doing another update just afterwards only results in a message that my
database is already up to date.
Anyone else experiencing this? Is my scanner up to date after this
error message or not?

The other thing is, that avast just doesnt find any viruses although
when receiving my mail on another machine with gdata AVK installed, it
shows me lots of malware.

Bye,
Patrice

Latest version is 4.6 - have you tried updating the program????

It's just telling you what the last error it encountered was, even if there
was no error you'd get a similar message after an update (well, I do
anyway).. The "Vps: Updated" and "(last version: 0509-6, Update-version:
0510-0)" also seems to indicate that the update was successful.
Anyone else experiencing this? Is my scanner up to date after this

Nope, well not that I've taken any notice of anyway. All I care about is
that the update worked....

Maybe there are no virus's to find? Maybe they are false-positives?
Malware isn't necessarily a virus anyway.....

Sounds strange that you are getting 'lots of malware' by mail.......... Try
running Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D - they will detect and remove the malware
that AV programs just aren't designed to detect or stop....

Try upgrading to 4.6,that might help.
If you are getting "lots of malware", you need to use a spam filter along
with setting your e-mail to "read in plain text" and not accepting any
attachments. The best Anti-Virus program is a educated user.

Doing it right now! :-)
It's just telling you what the last error it encountered was, even if there

anyway)..

So why don't I get the message the next time I update?
The "Vps: Updated" and "(last version: 0509-6, Update-version:

Nope, well not that I've taken any notice of anyway. All I care about is

That was exactly my question: Did it work or not. :-)
Maybe there are no virus's to find?

So why AVG does?
Maybe they are false-positives?

AVG is one of the best scanners around.
Malware isn't necessarily a virus anyway.....

But AVG does. But like almost any other scanner it makes my 333MHz
Celeron-PC unusable :-(. And its not free.

I know. But when I install a resource-consuming scanner I want it to
work! Otherwise I could just let it away.

Want kickass but hugely resource consuming? Grab AVK.

Avast's resource consumption isn't even noticeable on my computer whereas
AVK slows actions like just opening up a folder down noticeably.

HAHAHA!!!!!

You're kidding, right??

On 3 PC's here AVG kept detecting one virus that it never could remove, then
I put Avast on and it solved that problem AND found another 2 virus's that
AVG had been missing!

On a friends PC he was having lots of problems and couldn't understand why
as he had up-to-date AVG on there, then he tried Avast which got rid of the
virus's it found and that AVG had missed totally, no he has no problems.

And that is before I even start talking about the other problems AVG is
having!!!

No scanner is ever 100% perfect, impossible to do, and AVG has always been a
favourite of mine, right up until I found something better - Avast. Don't
discount the possibility that AVG is wrong until you have proven it right
with something else also known to be good....

Yes thats what I wrote although I confused AVG and AVK ;-) and that's
why I use Avast. But it's resource consumption is noticeable here
whith my 333-Celeron whereas it is not whith AVG. But it has other
disadvantages.

I already corrected myself. I meant AVK from GData not AVK! :-)
AVG,AVP,AVK: Why must they all have almost the same names? ;-)

I compared it whith AVK, as I wrote.

I noticed that some time AFTER I posted my reply... Anyway, good reminder
for others!! (my excuse anyway)...

Yep - no problems. Can't comment on AVK so I'll but out now!

I hear ya. I have licenses for both AVG and AVK, but I still use Avast's
free version primarily, with AVK as an on-demand scanner. I really really
wish they'd get around to optimizing it better, cause it is has by far the
best detection rates of anything I've ever tried.

AVK has good detection because of the engines it uses. It does not
maintain it's own malware database. It uses bitdefender and kaspersky
engine and bases.

I know. And last I checked it was cheaper than buying either of the
products whose engines it licences too. Which is a real nice thing. That
horrible resource drain isn't though :(

I'm not sure they rely entirely on updates from BD and KAV though. While I
was testing a while back I seem to remember AVK catching a piece of malware
neither BD nor KAV did. After that I just assumed AVK license the engines
but do their own updates. As with all assumptions, that may well be a wrong
one :)

No, kaspersky lab and bit defender write their own engine updates. In
some cases like in the case of F-Secure they have a light engine of
their own to make emergency updates.
