Hi--

I've just switched to Avast after years of NAV.

So far so good except for the "quaint" Euro-English in the documentation.
Does anybody know what "Schedule Boot-Time Scan" means in American? Like
maybe "Scan On System Boot?" Or does it mean something else?

Also what does "My computer is permanently connected to the Internet"
actually mean. Welded? Soldered? Cable? DSL? Computer has no "Off"
button?

Also how do you schedule a regular periodic scan?

I dunno. Maybe I need to buy a new subscription to NAV?

I just noticed Avast has a user forum on their web site. Maybe somebody
there talks American. Hate to sound provincial but it's nice to know what
the words mean...if you know what I mean?

Welcome aboard.

Well, I'm American, and "Schedule Boot-Time Scan" means.. well.. just
what it says. Schedule a scan when I boot. That's not difficult.
Also what does "My computer is permanently connected to the
Internet" actually mean. Welded? Soldered? Cable? DSL? Computer has
no "Off" button?

Oh, come on. It means "Tied with Nylon Rope" of course. {No, of
course not. It means you are not on dial-up; it means you have a full
time connection. Are you .. ah.. trolling?
Also how do you schedule a regular periodic scan?

I don't know, but if you practice safe hex, you won't need to do that.
Besides, how hard is it to, say once a week, click an icon and click a
menu item?
I dunno. Maybe I need to buy a new subscription to NAV?

It's your money.

Yes I know what you mean. You need to find the brain switch for
"Common Sense" and engage it.

that's 'euro-english'?

what part is unfamiliar to you? boot-time (the point in time during
which booting occurs) or schedule (to plan or appoint for a certain
time or date)...
Also what does "My computer is permanently connected to the Internet"

broadband as opposed to dial-up...
Also how do you schedule a regular periodic scan?

if you're using a more recent version of windows (like say xp) you do
so in the task scheduler that comes with the os...

Welcome aboard.

bts--

Many thanks for the translation.

I'm embarrassed about my lack of "common sense" or maybe it's a failure
of imagination. Anyway you nailed it for me. I'm grateful.

I wasn't really trolling--not consciously at least--just a preternatural
inclination to sarcasm. My apologies if I was offensive.

You guys upstate--is it Rochester--have a gift for diplomacy--delicacy of
expression. Very admirable...

Best for now...

Ah yes. Common sense and imagination sometimes seem related, no?

I took no offense; rather I was amused. said:

Rochester region, yes. We may be more diplomatic and delicate than
down-state... but that is always a matter of opinion.

Err the same as it means in England. Thankfully not all of your fellow
countrymen are so ****ing stupid as you.

You are as dumb as dogshit.

Quoth the raven named Conor:
SAdly stupid ignorant arses like bc do your country no favour.

Can't really disagree with that, other than to say that the attitude
with which one replies to them can make a great difference in their
future postings.

Learn some tact. {oh wait... this is Usenet! Belay that!)

I notice the uncouth yanks are much politer and tolerant than us well
behaved British.

I say British in the hope that you are, at least, not English.

Well, this is a friendly group, as for English originated in England, that
is true, but no one speaks English, rather a bastardised version of their
own misuse of the proverbial so called English, As for your profanities,
think about it, especially in your case, it must be the recourse of your
simple mind. Please feel free to reply in albeit your crude effort of the
'English language'

Please note that it was not "bc" who used the profanities. If you
review the thread, you will see that it was Conor who uttered.. um..
those words, and then "bc" who improperly trimmed the attributes. ;-)
