For a couple of days now when I boot up, a red avast box shows up telling
me it couldn't connect to updates. . .

any ideas what's happening?

Here it works.
I've done a manual check right now, it connects as usual and gives this
ouput:

- Program: Already up to date
(current version 4.5.549)
- Vps: Already up to date
(current version 0451-1)

re your web page:

the code for the "One shot solutions" link looks like this:

<li><a
href="%3CA%20HREF=%22Other%20stuff.html%22%3Ego%20to%20the%20next%20page%3C/A%3E">One
shot solutions</a><br>
</li>

The link doesn't work - use this coding instead:

<li><a href="Other%20stuff.html">One shot solutions</a><br></li>

I get this a lot.I think what happens is that Avast loads and tries to look
for an internet connection before the ISP has connected.
Never bothered to try and solve it.

Tried it also still got the error, eventhough trying to update the definitions manually. Is there a problem with the program? Currently deciding other free av.

Is there a possibility you recently reconfigured or turned on a
firewall? It is not able to connect the the Avast server, which sounds
like a firewall problem if you are able to browse ok with your web
browser. Avast is an excellent program and does not have a bug that
prevents connection. You can also go back to the Allwill site where you
downloaded avast, go to the forum and post a message there. But I bet
you have a firewall problem blocking Avast from communicating with its
server.
