Avast or AVG?

Made the same change a year ago. Don't regret a thing. I think Avast 4 is
outstanding.

AVG6 Free works well on most systems. Light on resources, and has good
detection if you keep it updated, which is true of any AV. I have used it
and the F-Prot combination for 2 years now and I have never had any probems
or virus on my system.

However, the best AV protection you can get at any price is to practice Safe
Hex and use your common sense. Read up on the various types of viruses and
what to watch for. Second; sedate your mouse so that it does not get click
happy the minute messages hit your inbox, especially, those with
attachments.

Additionally, don't rely totally on any active AV, you should also have an
on -demand
program as a backup. I use F-Prot as my backup. But, there's others that
work well too.

For overall protection, if you already, add these programs and update and
run them both at least once a week to keep your system free of parasites and
malware AV's do not detect.

The recent autoupdate problems caused Avast! to have former AVG
users trying out their product. Some posters gave favorable comments,
but it is hard to tell for sure if it is not due to marketoids' campaigning.


Imagine that - taking advantage of AVG's misfortune. It's a
jungle out there! :O)
 
All virii checkers will miss a virus, if it doesn't know what to look for.
That's the reason to update often. I like some better than others. If you
don't upgrade often, you are left behind. example: If you have antibiotics
to ward off vd, and frequent an aids infected brothel, you are not prepared,
no matter which drugstore you got the drugs from.

Avast! is better than AVG as far as email integration is concerned. I
has installed AVG. SInce I use OE quote fix with OE, AVG wiped out all
the message that I sent. It only appended its Virus Free signature.

I would recommend Avast!

Unlike AVG Free, Avast 4 Free offers free technical support including
Forums. I switched from AVG to Avast last summer when the former started
having problems with download of updates, I've never looked back.
 
Keep AVG and 'add' Avast to your arsenal.

Nothing new there. The present set of sexy .scr files that
are circulating contain a Win32.Spybot worm. I sent samples
to Avast, EZTrust and F-Prot as none could detect it, whereas
AVG did. EZTrust has verified it and has added it to their
latest definitions.

I have used Avast for about a year. My first annual free
subscription expired last month and was happy to renew it.

Don't rely on any 'one' AV unless you really don't have the
spare time to keep them updated. None can be perfect 'all'
the time.

With good safehex practices, AV effectiveness will be less
of a consequence.

None of them is perfect for everyone... I like the GUI of AVG and i use the
free version which has caught 8 or 10 intrusions over the lsat week.
For me, Norton was slow to scan and was bloatware. I don't need a
'norton protected recycle bin' in ' ddition to the 'main' one. New
virus/trojans are born evey week; no anti virus can claim to fix them all..
I am buying a Mac, the first chance i get. Tired of all the crap that gets
onto a WIndows machine.. I hate Macs, but they aren't as likely to pickup
all this crap..
The fun is gone from Windows web surfing!!!

I switched to avast but there is no boot time scan for win9x so I kept AVG
and disabled the resident for AVG.
Also I keep a updated F-Prot disk handy.

I did exactly the same (Avast, with AVG for boot). But now I have
swapped back to AVG and disabled the resident for Avast but kept it as a
reserve on-demand scanner. This is because I found that although, IMO,
Avast was better, it used too many system resources on my old PC whereas
AVG seems to be light on resources and my PC runs more smoothly as a
result.

Simple User Interface
How to ...?
Scheduling the Boot Time Scan

Click on the Menu button.
Choose Schedule Boot Time Scan.
Doing so displays a dialog allowing you to schedule virus scanning.
Check Archives, if you want scan all the archives.
Specify whether all the disks or just a specific folder should be
scanned.
Select Advanced options for scheduling details.
Select how to automatically process infected files.
Choose how to automatically process infected system files.
Click the Schedule button to confirm the settings.

I don't use this feature as my start up is slow enough now. :-)

I used to think Avast was better too, however I recently stopped using it
due to the fact I found a trojan that it doesn't detect and AVG does. I
emailed the trojan to Avast and they admitted it was a trojan but never
added it to their definitions... I also read about someone else who emailed
them some viruses that they never added. I've lost faith in Avast if they
won't add legitimate viruses/trojans that people give them.
