I am using the free home version of Avast.

In the Help section it shows how to change the avast4.ini file to
handle email protection.

It says there is a [MailScanner] section in the ini file.

I cannot find any such section in my avast4.ini file.

Should I create this section or is something wrong with my install?

Matter of fact, I cannot find the Mail Wizard with START|PROGRAMS|Avast?

Did I goof somewhere and not install the email protection, or is that
available only on the paid-for Pro version?

Did you choose to install the e-mail scanner when installing?
It's there. I use the free version and it works very well.

Have you enabled the resident e-mail scanner providor "Internet Mail"
(you have enabled the resident on-access scanner "Standard shield"?)?

If you want to configure manually you migth get some useful tips from
this posting in this group: [email protected]

I think you should uninstall and then reinstall
After install it will ask you for pop +smtp settings and also ask if you
want avast to include any new ones you make
Try and post back if you still have problems
