I've been trying to use avast with little success. The problems are

1) every time it finds a virus it stops dead in its tracks
2) it takes forever to do a dep scan of mpeg files

What gives? AVG hads no problem getting through a scan, and not
tripping over mpgs, or stopping at every little sign of trouble.
Anyone figure out how to get around these glitches?

Hmm. It didn't act that way when I tried it out. Usually when an
antivirus program behaves that way, it means that the program was
installed after an infection has already occured. That's because some
virii disable AV programs.

Thanks John

Well... the long delays on mpegs were only with the "thorough" scan
option selected.

I did install avg afterwards and it did find one trojan, maybe i
should reinstall

I think your PC is just messed up. Avast works fine for me. And... it
doesn't stop 'dead in its tracks'. It asks you to remove, quarantine,
move or cancel it, and it does it.

I did get an aswer from the avast crew... and it is not an install
error, or an incorrect setting on my part. The product is both cripple
ware and bad design (or has a feature)

on the plus side the avast crew helped me to understand the problem.
Youcan read about it here:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2

"Only the Professional version could automatically take actions over
virus detected", so the feature is not present in the home edition

"On-demand scanning should be fine if you choose a thourough scan of
all hard disks." meaning that it was no mistake that it took forever
to make its way through an mpg

I apologize for the blunt topic heading, but blunt though it may be
the way avast-home worked is the way it is supposed to work, and not
an error on my part.

1) In the case of what action to take when a virus is discovered, the
feture I want is not available in the home edition ( cripple ware) .

2) In the case of the long time to make its way thorugh an mpeg,
that's the way it is supposed to work ( whether or not you'd call it
bad design is the old is it a feature or a flaw)

I wouldnt call it crippleware. Its freeware but limited compared to the pro
(as is most freeware products that have a "bigger pro brother" .As for the
case of what action to take when a virus is discovered,im not sure what you
want. When avast finds a virus on my computer it pops up the "a virus was
found" box and offers these options....
move/rename
delete
repair
move to chest
continue
stop
Seems to be enough options there for most.
Maybe your setup for avast is not quite correct. Also in the pop up box is
"dont show this dialog next time box" , so maybe you havent enabled it
somehow?

When scanning, Avast will stop at the first infected file it finds &
ask if you want to do one of the above (also offers to attempt to
repair it). You have the option of selecting the action & also
whether to do the same with all files. If you choose the action for
all files, it will complete the scan whilst automatically carrying
out the action you requested on any subsequent virus-infected files.

Sorry for first post ...i didnt quite understand what you meant on first
reading about the virus detection options ,but have seen the link to the
avast forum .It seems you want automatic actions on virus found (personally
id rather see for myself what the av does with a suspect virus than auto
delete or whatever though). As you have pointed out its only available in the
pro.
