Even when I click the button to allow Avast Antivirus to scan my archive
files it doesn't seem to do it. I just get all the archive files listed and
a notice telling me that the files can't be scanned. I'm I doing something
wrong here?

Just one possibility, I notice your avg message on this post so assume you
have avg running, I am under the impression that avast will disable scanning
if avg is currently running?

Yep Scottie, you've still got the avg32 running, & Avast won't function
fully with at least any avg running & probably all others. I un
installed avg & all of avast's components came up, P2P, instant
messaging, & the standard shield. I think I had to go to the control
panel & add / Remove programs, click on change Avast & it worked.
