id say AVG over avast any day..

Perhaps you will get a better answer in the alt.comp.anti-virus newsgroup

Avast is a very good AV. I would say that it's probably better than
AVG myself. Some might disagree though.. :)

Hasn't slowed down my computer at all...

1. Does Avast! slow down your computer?

All AVs will slow your machine down to some degree when
configured for on-demand scanning. More often than not,
though, this isn't an issue with the speed of the computer or
a failure of the AV software (unless it's a Norton offering ;-),
but a result of below-par hard disks or decrepid IDE controller
configuration. Try making sure DMA mode is enabled on your
HDs (it should be). I've seen systems brought to a craw when
the IDE controllers are set to PIO when DMA was available.

For what it's worth, a decent boost (on an already clean system!)
is to disable on-demand scanning of opened executables, and
just scan created and modified files.
2. How does Avast! compare to AVG?

They're about the same, these days. Avast! has come a very
long way in just a few short months.

Haven't tried AVG...am happy with Avast.

And I'm the opposite, I haven't tried Avast and I'm happy with AVG. :)
When people get down to a couple of options, I don't know why they don't
just try both, and choose the one that suits best.
Usually I know in a few minutes if a program is a keeper or not.

Actually, they're both good. I've tried each and lean a little more
toward Avast, but AVG is nice too. Best is, as you say, to try both
and choose..

I am personally happy with AVast...

But its trial and error to find one you prefer

All resident software will to some extent slow down your computer.
2. How does Avast! compare to AVG?

In what way? In the job they do, I would say they are about head to head.
They both detect most viruses without too much false positives, but neither
of them are perfect. They are both free. I prefer the Avast! GUI and update
mechanism to AVG. AVG also seems to have a lot of problems with slow or
unavailable update servers.

As for system resources I once did a test with my own computer. I
deinstalled all AV software and measured two things: How fast my computer
booted (time from power on to logged in) and how much memory was used after
a full login. I then installed AVG and Avast! in turn, and measured the same
things again. My conclusion was that both products caused an increase in
both login time and memory usage. But the numbers for Avast! compared to AVG
was for my computer about twice as high.

I don't know AVG 7 but I tend to prefer Avast to AVG 6.

" 1. Does Avast! slow down your computer?
2. How does Avast! compare to AVG?"

I'm running W98 as well. Avast doesn't seem to slow down my computer,
but running a full scan takes forever. Sometimes, too, Windows crashes
in the middle of the run. I have 192 megs of RAM; maybe that's not
enough.

"I prefer this", says one.
"I prefer that", says another.

Yet no one says WHY they prefer one over another.

And quite rightly so. If I make a decision as to which I prefer, why
should I be required to pubicly justify that decision to anyone else? If
you wish to know why I made a particular decision, ask politely ... and I
may tell you the reason(s) ... or I may tell you that it's none of your
business.

It does slow down my machine (running Win95, 80 Megs Ram) so I
click on cacheman every few minutes to clear the memory cache.
Haven't tried AVG yet. My complaints with Avast are (1)that it is
crippleware - the free version does not scan the boot disk while
the paid shareware version does. (2) you are not supposed to use other
anti virus program along with Avast. (3) the Download file is in
an exe format; the files should be zipped so that I could read
the help/readme files prior to installation. HTH, He2
p.s. you might consider trying f-prot for dos as a secondary
antivirus program. He2
