When avast scans my incoming email, some sort of info alert pops up at
the bottom of my screen. It is apparently letting me know what's going
on, but it is very distracting and it shifts my window focus if I'm
typing. I have to click on the window I was typing on to continue. I
found everything I could in the settings that mentions 'silent mode'
but I haven't found what can stop it from doing that besides telling
it not to scan my incoming mail. Is there something I'm missing or is
that just the way this program works?

Open AVG Control Centre.
Click on Email Scanner.
Click on Properties at bottom right of the window.
Click on Properties in the next window.
Untick "Show Information Window"
Click ok.
Restart your mail program.

Go to avast.com and click on the support tab. They have a good forum
to help resolve your problems.
