Avast and use of resources

I currently have a Dell with McAfee antivirus pre-installed (3 month
trial).

I actually like McAfee, but I find their products overpriced.

I am considering going with the free Avast antivirus - which generally
has good reviews - except complaints that it uses a lot of CPU resources
and slows down your system.

Does anyone know / have experience as to how Avast's demand on
resources compares with Mcafee?
Because I hardly notice Mcafee's presence.

I can't see that I notice any more CPU usage or slower system than
with McAfee (used to use that one before). And I have enabled
EVERYTHING in avast! (scans more filetypes that usual, scan archives)

as above, been using avast for a while now and haven't noticed system drag
at all. Even if it did slow things down a bit I would consider this a trade
off for the security provided. I'd use a lot more time wiping my hard drive
than avast could ever use up by slowing my system down!

go for it
