Avast 4.5 released Nov 13 2004

From reading the avast forum, it sounds like some people might have to
remove any special settings from email clients after 4.5 is installed. It
has a more universal/transparent POP3/SMTP/IMAP operation, so no special
settings are required in email clients.

For me, Avast made all the necessary email changes automatically when I
installed the update. One thing however, it still used the sounds, which I
found annoying, even though I checked "Do not use avast sounds" in the
settings. I had to go into my sound settings and change all the Avast
sounds to None.

I noticed 2 small, but nice changes to Avast 4.5. First, there used
to be two Avast listings in MSCONFIG with earlier versions. But now there
is only one. Also, Avast 4.5 has something called "Network Shield", which
protects against Internet worms. So it helps complement your firewall,
assuming you have one installed.

Nice catch...

Note, however, that avast's update program will automatically update
you to v4.5, so if you already have avast installed (and updated) you
don't need to get the seperate install

I have Avast v4.1 on my laptop, but I don't get any automatic update to
v4.5. I went looking on www.avast.com and can't find the update to
v4.5. Is that because I have the free home version?

Thanks

I have the free Avast home edition and it downloaded the update
automatically. You may have downloaded it already and just not
noticed; such was the situation in my case. The updater did not
specifically alert me that I had upgraded to a new version, nor was
there any obvious indication (such as a change to the splash screen)
to notify me that I was now running v4.5. It does says "version 4.5"
in the "About avast!" dialog box, but that's pretty much it.

In fact, when I first heard there was a new version of avast!, I
downloaded a new install from the website, not at all aware I had
already been upgraded. I was about to uninstall the "old" version of
avast! when I suddenly remembered that just the night before I had
gotten a fairly large update (3-4MB) via avast's own update-program
and decided to check the version info. That's when I saw version 4.5
was already there.

I don't think you can download a stand-alone v4 to v4.5 update for the
home-edition; just download a "new" home edition and that will be
v4.5. If I recall, the web-site also doesn't stress the fact that
there's a new version (I remember seeing a lot of "version 4" and very
few "version 4.5") but if you grab it from avast's site you'll be
getting the latest-n-greatest.

Thanks. It finally did happen after I turned the computer off and then
back on again. Guess it needed something.
