Avance97 Audio Driver Issue

Hi there,
I hope someone can help cause Im at my wits end...
Trying to reinstall the latest drivers for Avance 97 Onboard Audio. Install
goes just fine, however, right at the end it tells me
"There was a problem installing this hardware
Avance AC97 Audio
An error occurred during the installation of this device
The data is invalid"
Now, I changed nothing on my computer, the sound just suddenly stopped. So I
figured, no big deal, reinstall the driver, reboot, everything is cool...
However, this did not work and I have tried absolutely everything I can think
of. I am not an expert, but certainly not a novice and have checked BIOS
settings etc
The only thing I can come up with is the automatic Windows updates, cause I
install them without review most of the time.
Please help. I don't want to buy a soundcard when I know this is fine, just
a technical issue. Worst case scenario is a format (nooo!) but what happens
if it doesn't work after that....
Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.
