Hello all :-)

I am having megga problems with my avance, realtek ac97 onboard sound chip.

Since I did a complete format of my hard drive and reinstalled WinXP I have
no sound, whatsoever.

I have tried endless web searches to identify the problem to no evail. A
friend of mine has helped me with remote assistance and checked everything
sound wise in my system which all appear to be okay.
My pc is a time amd 64 3000+

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Gaz.

Install the drivers for your sound chip from the
separate driver CD coming with your motherboard.

There are usually two sets of drivers/chipsets used for the AC97 on
board sound(crap that it is).
Post your mother board full name and revision and I'll try and help.
However you would be best served buying a cheap PCI sound card and if
you can still get one get an old Creative Labs PCI 128 card.An
absolute gem of a card.
If you need to get info on your system click here,

Everest Home Edition(free) :P

Thanks for all replies...very much appreciated. Turns out it was my fault.
when i installed windows after formatting drive it was recognising my 7 in 1
card reader before my hard drive, because of this my hard drive was named
drive i:\. so i had to open the base unit and disconnect, then install
windows then reconnect card reader....didnt notice at first but i didnt
connect it properly...wasnt sitting on the pins right so for some reason it
caused conflict with the sound chip.....all sorted now and thanks again.

I asked my local computer shop dealer this specific question as to how to go
on sound. He said the new mobo's have on-board sound about equivalent to
mid-range pci soundblaster cards and would be the 'cost effective' way to
go. I use a 5.1 computer speaker setup [about $50]...and 'critical' music I
listen to on my stereo system (not my computer). In other words, my AC97
onboard sound does nicely for gaming...which is mostly sound
effects...things like bangs, booms, crashes, spoken words...not music. And
what music there is, it's background...nothing critical. Each to his own,
but I still have an old SB 512 card [not the greatest of course], but I
think the AC97 sounds better. Nothing 'onboard' is going to match the top
level seperate boards of course, but then...does the extra expense justify
the 'gains'? That's subjective I suppose.

Have you double checked the BIOS settings? AC97 should be enabled
under integrated periphs. Also, pay close attention to the IRQ setting
during POST for multimedia device. Could be an IRQ conflict in windows
causing it. If it is, you can disable your serial ports in the bios to
free up IRQs. This is rare, but still happens to some people esp.
those using dial up modems (windows creates a virtual IRQ for them).

Personally, I disabled AC97 and went with an old Soundblaster Live
card myself. Wasn't pleased with the sound quality it offered and the
right speaker would cut out all the time (tried every software
solution to fix it).

Good luck,
StevieRay
