AV Software That Does Not Run in Background (On-Demand Only)?

Hi,

Well, I'm sick of AV software that continously runs in the background:
always seems to end up giving me a problem eventually (PC-Cillin and Bit
Defender). I've decided that I all I need is AV software that will check a
file for viral code when I tell it to, and maybe scan on command. Can
anyoe reccommend such an application?

Thanks,

F-Prot for Windows... Do a custom install and opt not to install the On-
Access scanner.

Your welcome. HTH.

There are several (free) possibilities at my web site you might
consider. While I do only on-demand scanning, I have to say it isn't
something I'd recomend to anyone who isn't prepared to do some
homework. You have to spend quite a bit of time learning the pitfalls.
Not all malware will be scanned for various reasons, including runtime
packers the av doesn't know about, and some self-extracting files. You
must learn what your av can handle and what it cannot. And you must be
willing to practice rigid "safe hex". In a very real sense, you have
to be in a position where you're not dependent at all on av.

Most will do that but you actually have to set an option to disable
background scanning.

That was my thought. I must say the only time I've had a virus detected was
by the background checker. I have no problem with av program running in
background.

My AV scanners are mostly an adjunct to curiosity,
to provide another layer of answers when I evaluate something.
I haven't been infected accidentally in years (since Babylonia).

I do. There's really no need for a virus scanner TO be running in the background constantly. Simply don't be stupid and run NEW programs without first scanning them and you'll be fine. I've been doing this for YEARS and have only had a problem when either the scan engine wasn't updated or the scan engine couldn't scan the boot sector while running under Windows (as is the case with McAfee's ScanPM). I even created a context-menu option the calls a batch file to scan the current directory so it's quite seamless and quick.

I much prefer my system to be as quick and responsive--and that means NOT having a virus scanner constantly running and sucking up resources/memory. It's the same reason I don't use AOL (among MANY other reasons), really. "Keep it simple." AOL and GUI McAfee are NOT simple.
