AV software help...

I recently wasted about an hour of download time plus $40 for PC
Tools AV software.
Only *after* paying for it and getting it do i find out that the damn
thing will not install!
I almost exclusively run Win98SE, and need decent AV software for it
(but would like to also install it for Win2K).

AVG seems to be decent, but they do not say how big and do not say
what platforms.
Their so-called FAQ took over a half an hour loading before seeing
anything, and (natch) the "top ten" are not remotely related to those
issues.
And their so-called technical support is rather snippy about a
non-registered e-mail query.

Norton/Symantec is -->out<--.
SO.
What package *CAN* i use??????????????????????

PC Tools Anti-Virus is for WinXP and 2000
see http://www.pctools.com/anti-virus/ (at the bottom)

AVG has worked perfectly for me on Win98 SE machines and WinXP
I think it's about an 8 meg d/l.

See if PC Tool will reimburse you, then go with AVG or Avast. Get the
free version of A-Squared (a2) trojan scanner

and use online analysis like
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan

I havew e-mailed PC Tools about that, asking for support OR total refund.

Is there a way to get a CD from AVG?
How does one ask support questions when a non-registered potential
customer has non-FAQ questions like this?

Anyone can download the AVG file for you - it's currently about 17.68MB for
the free version

FYI, it'll run on anything from Win95 up, so long as IE5 or higher is
installed

Eighteen *Mega*bytes????
That would take forever on POTS and would guarantee a number of
download *ZAPs* and *glitchS* !!
I attempted to buy it on the web, but their site insisted that ter
was nothing in the cart.
I have e-mailed them about my concerns.
 
Recommend eTrust Anti-Virus, free one-year trial, full updates.
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/ eTrust uses fewer system resources
than most A-V and is also used by ZoneLab for their professional firewall.
I've used eTrust since it was owned by Cheyenne without a hitch.

I've downloaded it a number of times on POTS - granted, using a download
manager such as GetRight to ensure no lost bits - but never a real problem
anyhow.
I don't recommend using a bought CD for the install, as it's inevitably
going to have been outdated - and will require a large number of updates to
bring it to currency. Far better is to get a friend to download the current
installer, and then update that one.
